Several things coming out of Pelosi and her staff this week have left me searching for words...

...first, her chief of staff uses her position to block a group of ten Republican congressmen from traveling to the BP spill site...

...and now this:

She's far more partisan and antagonistic than any other speaker during my lifetime...

...not Carl Albert...

...not Tom McCormack...

...not Tip O'Neill...

...nor Jim Wright...

...nor Tom Foley...

...nor Newt Gingrich...

...and definitely not Dennis Hastert...

...none has been as divisive nor demonstrative of behavior approaching her phenomenol incompetence...

...and yet...

...the Dems don't have the guts to replace her?

I'm 30 and have voted with a lever machine. This was of course at my middle of nowhere central PA hometown.

The average american is an idiot. I turned on FM radio on my way to work this morning for the first time in months and listened to some insufferable cow of a DJ spend 10 minutes talking about the freakin Twilight movies and inane details of the lives of celebities. I kept it on to see how long it would go before they actually played a song...I got to the office before a tune came on. This is America.. people know what Justin Bieber ate for breakfast but have no idea how their tax dollars are being spent.

Believe me - I hate Nancy Pelosi as much as any red-blooded American should, but I watched that video & I understand what she's saying. That's REALLY what is wrong with politics today is the attacks & partisanship that exists in it. It doesn't take a PHD to understand that the $$ given in unemployment from the government is injected back into the economy for the unemploeyd to buy basics - food, clothing, etc.

That's not necessarily true - deficit spending does not require a net zero calculation. At some point you gotta pay it back (or at least pretend like you want to) but unemployment benefits are not a zero sum game.

As for Pelosi's comments, she's right in that unemployment benefits are stimulative (although, one wonders, why are the Dems playing politics with this - the GOP is right on this, this is stimulus-related and by the Dems own math, we haven't come close to spending the big stimulus bill passed more than a year ago - pay the unemployment benefits from there - Pelosi says this is stimulus stuff so why not use that money?)

But the real problem is in the part of the statement that this is one of the best stimulus programs going. That speaks volumes about the failure this government has done in terms of providing stimulus to the economy. Unemployment benefits should be a lifeline and should be a small part of a bigger push. You don't grow the economy by writing unemployment checks.

Yup! You got it pegged. I seem to recall that until the early 1800’s you were required to own property to be eligible to vote. Any thoughts on how that would affect modern elections?

I’m always amazed at the wisdom and foresight of the original framers. The probability of assembling such a group and accomplishing what they did seems to me to be about equal to the big bang!

But in the early 1800's certain people were considered property as well.

Some of the smartest people I know don't own property, and some of largest property owners around should have their voting cards revoked.

But I agree with at least the concept of an intelligence based poll tax.

Demand is what is supposed to drive the economy, and the humble masses spend every last cent they earn...or in this case are given. That's not neccessarily the case with the people they are allegedly "taking it from".
