And today "The Other War" has gained a fresh and dubious distinction: it is the longest war in our nation's history, surpassing the conflict in Vietnam. 103 months passed between passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and the withdrawal of the last American combat forces from Vietnam. As of today, the Afghanistan war is 104 months old.

I'm sure this will turn political and that's why I put it in the Poli forum. But I'd just like to take a second to thank all of those that have served in Afghanistan. Its a largely forgotten war by most in the US. But its not only the longest war ever, its also been fought by all volunteers, including many that are on their 3rd and 4th tours in that hell of a place.

I agree - this was never a war that could be "winnable" according to most measures. Afghanistan was and always has been such a backwards place with little to no infrastructure that it was never going to emerge from this like a place like Iraq could and has. Afghanistan will always be a place where we (or someone else) might have to go into every now and then and sweep clean. It's been that way for awhile and there's nothing saying it won't still be for some time to come.

We'll never know, but I doubt it'd be over if we hadn't attached Iraq. Islamists are like cockroaches or mosquitos. For the foreseeable future they're always going to be out there and scurrying or buzing around. All we can do is try to keep them reasonably under control. I think if we want to keep them from taking control of Afghanistan again we need to be prepared to be involved for a very, very long time.

Their one advantage over us is their persistence and our tendency toward lack thereof. We look at wars as having to have timelines and/or defintie ends. To them it's "as long as it takes." They don't care if it's 1 day or 1,000 years.

President Obama needs to bring our troops home NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are accomplishing NOTHING over there, we will accomplish NOTHING over there. I just assumed he would be smart enough to see this.
