Kennedy was pretty bad and that was more like a coronation, contrived to launch a 2024 run.

Meanwhile, you have a number of progressive war veterans, teachers, small business owners, etc that didn't have the time to Peace Corps after attending Harvard who are trying to primary the likes of Feinstein and Manchin. There's a split in the Democratic Party which could widen and might preserve Republican control.

The Dems are a hot mess right now and their establishment is out of touch and flailing.
The Democrats can't put up a polarizing figure for the rebuttal, so that leaves out Pelosi, Waters, Warren, etc.. Also, there are quite a few top Democrats that are contemplating running in 2020, so they're out. That leaves you with the rising stars who will grab the viewers attention and hopefully bring in some fundraising $$$s. What you're left with is a young (future of the party) Congressman with name recognition. You might not know Joe Kennedy, but as a liberal you'd surely know the last name.

Poll: Trump's first State of the Union garners lowest net positive reaction in two decades
Shocker. And that's given that people don't expect much from him to begin with. Like I heard some talking head say, it's something like if he doesn't foam at the mouth and sticks to the teleprompter it'll be viewed as a success.

There is no reason to doubt the results. And it's true about Trump. He's so bad that if he doesn't totally implode people say his speech was a success. It really is like that.

BTW this is a guy who spent much of his campaign criticizing people who use teleprompters. Now the situation is one in which he has to use a teleprompter in order to avoid disaster. And he does an awful job at it. He's pathetic.

BTW I the guy I saw making the "frothing at the mouth" comment is David Frum.

But what he said is correct. Trump is AWFUL making speeches using a teleprompter. Absolutely AWFUL. The whole thing with Trump speeches is looking to see if he's going to go completely off the rails. And if he doesn't people say he did well. It's kind of like if someone with Down's Syndrome is making a speech. He is not held to the same standard as most people would be. He gets through it and people say, "Ok he didn't completely implode so that was OK."

And it's really ironic because of all the time he spent during the campaign talking to his cultists about people who use teleprompters. Now it's not only that he has to do it to avoid disaster. He's absolutely terrible at it.

Check this out:

https://aflcio.org/press/releases/presi ... st-workers
Last night, President Trump painted an everything-being-great picture of America that while optimistic, is not the reality for most working families. That may be how his friends are living, but the working men and women we represent aren’t seeing the same America; and his policies are making it worse. The truth is many of the things he says are undermined by the actual policies he supports.
I'm watching Trumka right now on TV talking about how Trump's regulatory reforms are hurting protections for the health and welfare of workers.

Wonder when the Trump bots are going to get a clue.

Yes, there was the "YOU LIE!" but that was an outlier. The outlier from this SOTU was the one Dem Congressman from WV who actually stood and clapped. He probably got chastised by Nancy.

Obama's first SOTU below. Watch from about 5:20 to 7:00 where he gives the usual reach across the isle schtick that every POTUS does. Everyone stands and claps. Of course there are always particular issues with which both sides don't agree and they don't stand in unison every time. Did the Dems stand once this week? They are going to be the losers if they keep up with this divisive behavior.

More like grumbles, but honestly, I had less problem with that. We know there are things on which the two sides don't agree. But if they can't agree on working together and that low unemployment is good... :suspicious:
