VADM Michelle Howard was recently confirmed by the Senate for promotion to ADM in the position of Vice Chief of Naval Operations, simultaneously making her the first woman to hold four stars in the Navy and the first woman to be the #2 flag officer in the Navy. She could also be in line to become the first female CNO when ADM Jonathan Greenert moves on. Howard will ALSO become the first African-American woman to hold four stars throughout DoD. She was also the first African-American woman to command a ship (USS Rushmore LSD-47). Howard has commanded Amphibious Squadron SEVEN and Expeditionary Strike Group TWO. She commanded Combined Task Force 151 during the 2009 pirate situation off Somalia that led to the movie "Captain Philips."
Howard is currently Deputy CNO for Operations, Plans, and Strategy.
