You really need to learn how to read. Sumner was from the North, Brooks from South Carolina. Sumner had some scathing words for Brooks kin and fellow Congressman, Andrew Butler. Brooks was going to suggest a duel,but due to the derogatory comments Sumner made, he wasn't viewed as a gentleman. It's not excuse for violence, but it's the facts of the story.

This is sad. Come on, Obama took a cheap shot at judges over a disagreement on their opinion and did it in a venue where he knew they couldn't respond. IMO, and again as an original Obama voter, it's hard to come up with things I'm more disappointed in than I am in Obama using the Supreme Court as basically a straw man to make political hay about (I did that on purpose) as he did that night and as he did again yesterday when he clearly dared the justices to rule anything unconstitutional with regards to the health care law. It will score him points politically for his partisans, but it's still cheap and it cheapens all those involved. I had hoped for better.
