Re: Thank you coal!

We'll have to invest in re-educating them into other careers, whatever their choice is. It's also why we should have on-going, large-scale, publicly-funded infrastructure projects in the US which pay good wages and benefits. It benefits middle-class workers and society as a whole. At it's core, the...

Re: Thank you coal!

Don't disagree, very tough to implement. I think if enough people are won over though, and it's what people democratically vote for, it should be implemented. The US has an issue where corporations - not people - are making the calls right now...energy policy including. Way too many people are blis...

Re: Thank you coal!

Nuclear is a great option, and should be strongly pursued as the transitory energy source.

Agreed that China should be held to the same standards, but we're talking about the US. I'd like to think we're better than China.

Hey man, I'm the expert on everything yet you're the one who has 5x the posts and basically lives on this website (and probably others). I'm not an expert on everything, but I do use my other time wisely to actually read on things I don't understand. Try it one day. And I don't laugh at you behind y...

First of all, I know you won't agree with anything I post so I won't. Second, it's not my job to educate you on reality. You're a big boy (I assume) that knows how to seek out information and use the internet, but my advice is that you don't use it to confirm your own beliefs. Science is there to h...

No one gives a sh*t how much fossil fuel is left; climate change has become a life and death situation yesterday . The sky is falling because it literally is...people are dying all over the world, more extreme climate events, mass extinctions, infrastructure continually damaged, etc. Time to get off...

Replacement by innovation, sure. Replacement by gunpoint of the gubmint? Yeaokay. :dunce: Exactly. I agree that coal's and eventually natural gas' days are numbered. Climate change and green energy should be a priority but how we get there is important. And a good leader doesn't just do what ...

That's how democracy works: people getting together, using their collective power of governance, to push certain things out and others in. Coals days are certainly numbered and natural gas will get there in the next few decades too. Nothing is forever, and people in the energy sector should especia...

Affordable? Should be free for low-income people, subsidized by people like you and me and the ultra-wealthy who can afford it through higher taxes. Re: Thank you coal!

A 70% federal tax rate plus state taxes is nuts. Why bust your ass to create something that could change the world if the government is going to take 75+% of your income? And if someone's already done it, why remain a US citizen? They can move their citizenship and assets to a more tax-friendly loc...

Re: Thank you coal!

My response is good, keep having them unable to compete with renewable energies until fossil fuels are a thing of the past. Subsidize them more until renewables overwhelm the fossil fuel industry and end it once and for all. That's what many are voting for so that's what we expect from our government.

Re: Thank you coal!

Aging infrastructure and decades-long tax cuts. Some states and localities decided to increasingly privatize utilities to offset the lack of incoming money, but the utilities business is a low-margin industry which makes cost-cutting a real issue. The Feds also continue to bail out private companie...

Re: Thank you coal!

^No surprise. As explained multiple times in this thread, blaming wind energy in this crisis is such a red herring. The entire system failed, and last I read wind capacity was down 25%, coal and nuclear at 30%, and natural gas at 40%. You simply have to winterize equipment before cold-weather events...

Re: Thank you coal!

There's theoretical concepts to harvest energy from storms to power us through storms, so who knows. Battery banks will also become super efficient at some point, so it could simply be a matter of saving energy during the good times and switching to battery power during the bad ones. But yes, I hope...

Re: Thank you coal!

I'm not sure trying to not freeze to death in your home equates to keeping your home at a comfortable temp. So again, these battery banks won't help much in this case. I'm not seeing how we get around not needing fossil fuel energy plants. Assuming you mean no nuclear, I'm not sure how solar and wi...

Re: Thank you coal!

Solar battery banks from good contractors are typically sized for 2-3 days of back-up energy at minimal load output. Of course the user needs to understand they can't be using the energy like it's a normal day. But in an emergency, the point isn't to heat your home to a comfortable level. Hell, it m...

Re: Thank you coal!

How well do solar panels work with a few inches of snow on them? They don't, but that's not the point. In a flat state like TX, panels supplement or fully provide energy for a home. They reduce loads on shared infrastructure, cut down on environmental impacts, and may even return energy back to the...
