Re: 2020 Libertarian Party Nomination Process Megathread
Yeah well thats just becauseIvytalk wrote:Of course they would. The LP wants to become a major force in politics, but members realize that they have to build from the ground up, with candidates for state and local offices. What good is an Amash, Lee, or Massie if they run once, flame out, and don’t do any party-building? My problem with Amash is that he’s reading his own fawning liberal press clippings. If I wanted to, I could get the nomination for state attorney general tomorrow.

I wouldn’t mind debating incumbent Kathy Jennings in a public forum. She’s a central-casting Donk statist.

Does an Amash Libertarian nomination & campaign hurt or help Trump?

Republicans would say the same about Amash in 2020 (if Trump loses) that the Donks said about Jill Stein in 2016.

Re: 2020 Libertarian Party Nomination Process Megathread
Yep he’d hurt Trump. He’d pull off the independents who voted for Trump in 2016, including the previous Obama votersUNI88 wrote:Does an Amash Libertarian nomination & campaign hurt or help Trump?
He would also pull in the obvious Never Trumpers
But he would also draw some Dem voters who would otherwise vote Biden if there was no viable 3rd party choice
Ultimately, we need to get out of this paradigm as seeing 3rd parties as some kind of party crashers. The LP has a legitimate place in our political system - and the only way to break through is to throw an election or two to the opposition. That goes for the Green Party too.
If you win an election as a Dem because a quarter of the electorate voted for a third party like the LP, then that is not a mandate to enter office and start building your statist paradise.

Re: 2020 Libertarian Party Nomination Process Megathread
I’ve followed the British LibDems (LDP) over the years. Its supporters are generally well educated and favor socially liberal policies and market-based economics (although they opposed Brexit). From time to time, the LDP has aligned itself either with Labour ( under Blair) or Conservatives. However, it has not fared particularly well in the House of Commons. It’s now down to 11 seats in the 650-member House, although it got 11% of the national vote. It has done better in local elections in certain parts of the UK. Not surprisingly, the LDP favors a proportional representation electoral system instead of the current plurality system. My take is that the UNI88s of the UK might vote LibDem, but the LDP is still very much a minority party and is likely to remain so. The UK has a duopoly, too.
Last time I looked, the British Greens held exactly one seat in the House of Commons. Chizzy and Ganny could fight over it!

Serious discussion now about holding the 2020 Libertarian Convention online instead of in-person. There are legal as well as practical issues here.

Amash announced that he has formed an “exploratory committee” to seek the LP nomination.

Better get him a Secret Service detail, statIvytalk wrote:Amash announced that he has formed an “exploratory committee” to seek the LP nomination.
If he jumps in, Trump might go after him more than Biden... which in turn would give a LP candidate the biggest microphone they’ve ever had.
And it will give people a chance to hear Amash repudiate both the Dems and the Trumpist GOP
I really hope he does this

My brother is a big "L" libertarian and has been a delegate to the national convention. Says Amash is a carpetbagger like Bob Barr was and won't vote for him. Says a lot of his Libertarian friends feels similar.

Yeah, there’s a fair amount of grumbling from my cap-L Libertarian friends here, a few of whom support one of the many “unknowns.” It’s crass opportunism on Amash’s part, but he does provide some name identification. I am an alternate delegate to the National this year. We’re having Zoom conferences with some candidates later this week.
Better Justin Amash than Vermin Supreme, I say.

Maybe. I know you’ll take the under 1%, with your renowned fondness for third parties.

That's the problem with Libertarians and their ability, or lack of, to find any cohesion to rally around - they are by their very nature stridently independent and resistant to any conformity or compromise. I can't see them rallying around someone in any great numbers.Ivytalk wrote: ↑Wed Apr 29, 2020 5:35 amYeah, there’s a fair amount of grumbling from my cap-L Libertarian friends here, a few of whom support one of the many “unknowns.” It’s crass opportunism on Amash’s part, but he does provide some name identification. I'm the one who set the 4% bar. That was back when you LP guys were so excited because Johnson was polling in the 9's.
And don't confuse my grounded reality with a dislike of third parties.
