Week 1 - Conference by Conference Breakdown

NAU 30-10 UTEP
UNI 23-26 UMT
WIU 23-26 MTST
MCNSE 17-14 NOCO
MVSU 7-35 UND

  • NConf Record: 8-6
    Overall: 8-6

    vs. FCS: 3-3
    Overall: 3-3

Best Performance: UC Davis 44, (FBS) San Jose St. 38 - Jake Maier picks up where he left off last year by throwing for 446 yards and 3 touchdowns in an FBS sort-of upset.

Worst Performance: Southern Utah 30, North Alabama 34 - I think we all knew SUU would be down this year, but I don't think any of us expected them to allow 554 yards to a first-year transitional.

Most Surprising Result: Southern Utah 30, North Alabama 34 - The Even-Numbered Year Curse™ appears to be striking again for the T-Birds. Since joining the Big Sky, they are 25-12 in odd-numbered years while they are now 14-21 in even-numbered years.

Southland

swbap 7-49 HBU
ACU 27-55 BAY

NICH 26-23 KU (OT)

  • NConf Record: 4-6
    Overall: 4-6

    vs. FCS: 1-0
    Overall: 1-0

Best Performance: (#18) Nicholls St. 26, (FBS) Kansas 23 (OT) - After a few near-misses the last couple years, the Colonels finally found an FBS team they could finish the job against.

Worst Performance: Incarnate Word 30, (FBS) New Mexico 62 - This wasn't a bad result considering the circumstances, but New Mexico was probably the worst FBS opponent the Southland lost to this week.

Most Surprising Result: Houston Baptist 49, (DII) Southwest Baptist 7 - The Huskies were only 3-point favorites here. Could this be a sign they're finally headed in the right direction?

Missouri Valley

BUT 23-21 YSU

  • NConf Record: 4-5
    Overall: 4-5

    vs. FCS: 2-3
    Overall: 2-3

Best Performance: South Dakota 24, (FBS) Kansas St. 27 - Despite losing do-everything quarterback Chris Streveler, the Coyotes are still able to put a solid Big XII program on the ropes.

Worst Performance: (#25) Youngstown St. 21, Butler 23 - The Penguins allow 16 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and fall victim to the week's biggest upset (FCS or FBS).

Most Surprising Result: (#25) Youngstown St. 21, Butler 23 - Prior to this, Youngstown had won 20 straight regular-season games against FCS competition with an average margin of about 32 points.

OVC

SEMO 21-48 ARKST
EIU 20-55 ARK

  • NConf Record: 2-6
    Overall: 2-7

    vs. FCS: 2-2
    Overall: 2-3

Best Performance: Tennessee St. 34, Bethune-Cookman 3 - The Tigers win yardage 525-244 in a surprisingly dominant win.

Worst Performance: Murray St. 10, Southern Illinois 49 - The Racers commit 6 turnovers (3 went back for TDs) in a surprisingly ugly loss.

Most Surprising Result: Tennessee St. 34, Bethune-Cookman 3 - TSU has now won 11-straight over FCS non-conference opponents, all of them fellow HBCUs.

Pioneer League

wnmu 9-38 USD
BUT 23-21 YSU
RMU 28-49 DAY
GTOWN 39-14 MARIST

MHEAD 23-49 EKU

  • NConf Record: 6-2
    Overall: 6-2

    vs. FCS: 2-2
    Overall: 2-2

Best Performance: Butler 23, (#25) Youngtown St. 21 - The Bulldogs pull the upset largely thanks to an error-free performance: 0 turnovers & just 1 penalty for 0 yards.

Worst Performance: Marist 14, Georgetown 39 - Allowing 369 passing yards and 4 touchdowns to a QB from Georgetown is not a good way to start a season.

Most Surprising Result: Butler 23, (#25) Youngtown St. 21 - Butler gets their first win of the I-AA/FCS era against a current MVFC team.

Tomorrow: the rest of the playoff conferences.

TSU plays in a tougher conference but then other HBCU's play well against non-HBCU opposition.

North Alabama may be on their way to being a force in FCS, like they were in DII.

I would disagree with Southern Utah being worst performance, or even a surprise. North Alabama is good, and a close loss to them -- even at home -- is nowhere near as bad as getting hammered 79-13 by a G5.

Didn't UNA give McNeese a good game a few years ago, as a DII?

I see they lost to Jacksonville St in OT, in 2013, and lost to them by 19 in 2015, the year they lost the championship game to NDSU.

UNA was only 5-5 last year. I know they've typically been better than that, but still…

(and the 72-19 loss was really the worst G5 loss since Nevada is a bit worse than Fresno)

I thought about this one yesterday when someone posted that it was a surprise. It was not a surprise to me. You have to understand that North Alabama has been a top program in Division II for a long time. If they'd have played Southern Utah at any time while they were Division II I'd have circled the game as one where a FCS team could lose to a Division II team. I've said for years that there is little difference between the very top of Division II and the top of FCS. It's not like FCS vs. FBS. Remember, as recently as 2014 the Division II champ beat a FCS semifinalist by 47-21 and it wasn't really that close. Also that wasn't the first time that a I-AA/FCS semifinalist got destroyed by a Division II playoff team.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

We played Southern Utah two years ago and also played them in 2014, and I know a great deal about North Alabama because I'm in Florence, AL pretty regularly for work. Based on what I know of each, I expected North Alabama to have as good or better talent. I suppose it's a mild upset being a road game for UNA, and it's hard to adjust to the altitude, but hardly surprising in my view. But I get it if you're not familiar with UNA.

I watched the last quarter or so of the SELA game...thought you guys had it. Too bad, nothing like knocking off a slum belt program.

Worst BSC loss has to be the laugher in Fresno. I mean seriously. :ohno:

PSU game has to be up there as well, it's not like Nevada is going to be anything special this year.

And Kennesaw choking like that in a game they had in the bag... :ohno:

Newberry is a pretty good DII program, but still… they were 5-6 last year while WCU was 7-5.
