Ford defintely one ups Toyota’s July announcement about the return of the Supra and it entering NASCAR next season (Xfinity).

NASCAR Cup Ford Mustang ready to race
Image
Ford has unveiled the Mustang NASCAR Cup car that will carry the brand’s flag in the series next year, where it will compete against the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and Toyota Camry.

Ford has been fielding a Mustang GT in the second tier Xfinity series since 2011, but this marks the first time that the Mustang will race in Monster Energy NASCAR Cup. It replaces the Fusion sedan, which is being phased out of the automaker’s American lineup in the coming years.

The purpose-built Mustang race car isn’t named after a specific production model, but its bodywork most closely resembles the GT350. As with all NASCAR entries, it has been engineered to a strict criteria laid out in NASCAR’s rule book.

The new cars will make their racing debuts at the 2019 Daytona 500.“

Alonso: lack of track action prompted me to quit F1
The two-time champion announced earlier this week that he would not be competing in F1 in 2019, but has not ruled out a return in the longer term if the right opportunity came up.

Speaking for the first time on Thursday about the call not to carry on in F1, Alonso said that the predictability of grand prix racing and the lack of excitement proved to be major turn offs for him.

“The action on track is not the one I dreamed of when I joined F1, or when I was in different series, or the action on track that I experienced in other years,” said Alonso, speaking ahead of this weekend’s WEC round at Silverstone where he will be driving for Toyota.

“I stopped because the action on track in my opinion I feel is very poor. In fact, what we talk about more in F1, is off track.

“We talk about polemics. We talk about radio messages. We talk about all these things, and when we talk so many times about those things, it is a bad sign.

“It is because the on-track action was very poor on that weekend, and that is what I feel in F1 now, and I think there are other series that maybe offer better action, more joy and more happiness, so that is what I try to find.”

Yeah. F1 needs stages, and a chase, and cautions for hot dog wrappers to bunch up the field when too many people are getting lapped. That would make it good.

Alonso is just butthurt because McClaren is in a down spell. I hope they get back to winning championships while he’s on his quest for the Triple Crown. That’s the only reason he’s leaving for Indy. Then he takes a swipe at F1 as he’s doing the walk of shame. Such a diva.

The much-maligned F1 halo may have saved its first life (or at least serious head/neck trauma) today.

Nico Hulkenberg ran straight into Fernando Alonso on the first turn of the Belgian Grand Prix today, which punted Alonso up and on top of Charles Leclerc's car.

Here's Leclerc's halo as well as video:

Since was in Raleigh Sat for the JMU @ NC State game, Sun went to the throwback Southern 500 race (Darlington only about 2 1/2 hrs from Raleigh). Was mostly full. One of the few remaining races, along with the Daytona 500, Bristol Night Race, Watkins Glen, & Homestead that is still mostly full or sells out, & like those, has one of the best atmospheres. Only 1 race a year and the whole throwback thing helps. Also went in 2015, and last year after the JMU @ ECU game.

Just like the JMU @ NC State game the day before (91 with a heat index of 102), was hot as balls. Darlington Sunday was something like 92 with a heat index of 103. Sat, right after the game ends, NC State officials put out a call over the PA to evacuate the stadium and seek shelter due to lightning in the area and started blaring some siren. Fierce T-storms hit about 1/2 hr later..Sun, around 5:30 pm, right after driver intros were suppose to start, track officials over the PA put out calls to clear the grandstands due to lightning in the area. I don't know if most people cleared the grandstands the 1st time, because I hadn't gotten to my seat yet. Most everyone just crammed under the grandstands- at least that was the case in the Turn 4 Pearson Grandstands). So after 6 pm they give the all clear. The grandstands refill & they do the national anthem. Could see a lightning bolt to the west behind Turn 4 right as the anthem was ending. They again put out a call to clear the grandstands due to lightning in the area/NWS advisory). They kept giving the advisory to leave the grandstands and this time people most of the fans were fuck it, we aren't leaving. You can't tell 60k drunk rednecks to evacuate more than once lol..At least the nearby storms cooled things down.

At least the race wasn't like 2015- 18 cautions (that was before stage cautions), 4 hours/28 min. Sun was 6 cautions, 3 hrs/49 min. Keselowski gets his 1st win of the season running the Rusty Wallace’s paint scheme from the 1990 Cup season.
Image
A rundown of the throwback paint schemes:
https://www.yahoo.com/news/retro-rundow ... 59764.html
Results:
1 Brad Keselowski, led 24 laps.
2 Joey Logano, led 18 laps.
3 Kyle Larson, led 284 laps, won 1st & 2nd stage, was beat out of the pits by Keselowski on the final pit stop.
4. Kevin Harvick
5. Chase Elliott
6. Kurt Busch
7. Kyle Busch
8. Erik Jones
9. Jamie McMurray
10. Denny Hamlin, led 11 laps.
11. Martin Truex, led 30 laps, done in by pit penalty, uncontrolled tire, & then a loose wheel.

I was supposed to go to Darlington, but begged out. My dad, uncles, and cousins were there. I’m sort of glad I skipped because my dad also said it was miserably hot, and of course the race was a complete snoozer. Larson had some shit luck there at the end. Crowd looked nice on TV. I’d expect more struggling tracks like Dover to lose a race to get the one race left more packed for TV. It’s hard to sell a sport when the stands are 40% full.

Ouch.
Furniture Row Racing, the reigning Cup championship team, announced Tuesday it will cease operations after this season, citing a lack of necessary funding.

I assume MTJr will bump the underachieving Suarez and become the #2 man at JGR behind Kyle Busch. I also assume he'll keep Cole Pearn as Crew Chief. That's been a helluva combo for a few years now.

Actually, FoxSports is saying multiple sources have the two going to JGR for 2019, so yep, this is likely. https://www.foxsports.com/nascar/racehu ... 2866883770

Interesting new interview on Dale Jr's concussions that really puts a lot of perspective on his decision to retire:
phpBB [video]

The two big crashes in his career as far as concussions were 2002 California and 2012 Kansas testing (which there is not impact video of). The 2002 California impact is just insane, and into solid concrete before SAFER barriers. You can see how a young man reacts to head trauma in first below video (Jr trots to the ambulance in pain and races the next race) as opposed to an older man with multiple previous concussion in the second video (Jr barely banged the wall at Michigan in 2016 and missed almost a year):

JFC! Lewis Hamilton breaks last year’s track record by 3.4 seconds in qualifying at Singapore. That’s just insane driving. Ferrari and Red Bull were favored in qualifying and yet Hamilton once again puts the Mercedes in front. :notworthy:

I'm not going to be there tomorrow, as I'm heading to Georgia. My dad and youngest son will be there. For betting, the big three (Harvick, Truex, KyBusch), Larson, and Keselowski are always safe plays. JJ is the master of Dover, but he's eliminated so who knows with him. If I had to put money on the race, I'd split it between Truex and Larson.

My dad dropped a bit of a bomb on me yesterday. He said last week he and his three brothers discussed dropping our eight season tickets that they've had since the first Dover race in 1969. The final straw was this spring when the track discontinued the shuttle busses from Blue Hen Mall. We had to drive all the way in to the track and hoof our coolers about a mile and a half through foot-tall grass. Not a biggie for me, but the seniors and kids were grumbling. I called the track the week after the spring race and eventually worked up to a teleconference with three track managers in sales and marketing. Probably the only reason I got an ear is because one of my uncles works for the Speedway for NASCAR events and they recognized my last name. They blamed the state. I told them they were going to lose Delaware customers in droves, as the shuttle was very popular. I think they understood, so we'll see if the shuttle is back on tomorrow.

If not, there's one family tradition that will be going away for us.

Smoove. This is what a driver at the absolute prime of his skill and career looks like. Drastically outspent by Ferrari but making them look like chumps:

US Grand Prix weekend in Austin, TX.

Lewis Hamilton with his first chance of the year to clinch the F1 Championship and break his championship tie with Sebastian Vettel (they each have four F1 titles). It's a matter of when, not if.

Clinch scenarios; If Hamilton finishes X, then Vettel must finish Y:
X/Y
1st/3rd (or lower)
2nd/5th
3rd/7th
4th/8th
5th/9th
6th/11th

It's raining steadily in Practice 1 right now on ESPNU and they have stopped the session due to puddles on the track. They had been running in rain tires until the water started pooling. EDIT: Session restarted just after I posted.

Qualifying will be interesting tomorrow afternoon with rain in the forecast again.

Sunday is supposed to be dry but cloudy.
