Not many starts attached to McNeese State recruits. The big one to me was to see if they did indeed sign a quarterback I saw on TV playing in the Louisiana Class AA State championship game. While I was watching the game the announcers mentioned that he had committed to McNeese State. I didn't know what his stats were at the time but just watching him I figured he was not a big time recruit because of his size. 5-11, 175. But watching him play he looked really good.

So yesterday I checked and he did sign with McNeese. They best I can find is where he was through 13 games (the State championship game I watched was his 14th). At that point he was at a 62% completion percentage, 2,496 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. He's also athletic. Anyway, after having watched him play, I was pleased to see him on the list.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Not listed are the DL transfer from UVA (started 5 games last season, already enrolled) and the Pitt QB transfer (started 6 games last season, already enrolled). Surprisingly, he came to JMU, was told JMU didn’t have a scholly available, and the kid volunteers to walk on, even though he supposedly had other scolly offers (I’m assuming other I-AA). I assume if he wins the starting job or the #2 spot he’ll be put on full scholly.

Keep coming north to NJ we have talent.
Yes NJ has been very good for JMU, who is often going up against UD & VU among others, for these recruits. JMU had 5 from NJ on last season’s roster. All 5 were 2 deep, with one starter, rSr WR Ismael Hyman (Manalapan/St John Vianney, Kansas transfer).
Again next season JMU will have 5 from NJ on roster, with again possibly all 5 on the 2 deep. 3, possibly 4 will be starting.
-Rising So WR Ezra’s Archie (Sicklerville/Timber Creek) who as a true Fr was basically the #6 WR. Had 8 receptions/90 yds vs Maine & got CAA Rookie of the Week when several of the other WR were banged up/out.
-Rising rSo OG Zaire Bethea (South Orange/Depaul Catholic) started the qtrs, semis & NC.
-Rising So OG Liam Fornadel started the semis & NC game. He probably struggled vs NDSU, but he was up against some studs. Think was only the 2nd JMU true Fr OL to not redshirt, and the 1st to start a game, since 04’. 2 former JMU OL in the NFL now, and neither played as true Fr. Out of NJ powerhouse Don Bosco Prep, was probably JMU’s #1 recruit last year. Had double digit I-A offers.
https://rivals.com/content/prospects/20 ... nadel-5049
-Rising Sr corner Curtis Oliver (Paramus/Paramus Catholic) who was JMU’s nickel back this past season, has 21 career starts. Possibly could be starting at a safety next season.
The kid JMU inked from NJ with this class had double digit offers last year, including 5 CAA schools. I believe originally committed to Villanova, but spent a season prepping in NJ at The Peddie School. The kid’s HS was Saint John Vianney, same HS as the graduating JMU WR Hyman, so that might have played a role there..

With JMU graduating both AA safeties, I expect he’ll be on the 2 deep as a true Fr..

Montana didnt sign any CBs so this class is a joke. Right now we couldnt play a dime package with the CBs on our roster we would have to rob the safety position. Hey we got a drop down safety from U of Arizona!

Not very much to be excited about if you are a Griz fan, its been that way for the last 15 years, maybe its our new thing?

For JMU, on the one hand, not a lot of stars, no 3 star (Rivals) (usually have 1-2), only a few 2 star. On the other hand, of the 15 from HS, 12 received I-A offers, with 10 of them multiple I-A offers, including a couple P5s.

I just found out that our big local "signing" may not have been a signing at all.

What the heck does "preferred walk-on" mean? It sounds like some kinda stunt to get out from under the schollie limit....

An interesting one in the McNeese class is Trent Winbush of Rayne High School. This guy rushed for 2,510 yards at 10.2 yards per carry in Louisiana AAAA football. He had a couple of games where he averaged 24.5 (11 rushes for 270 yards) and 23.8 (13 rushes for 310 yards) per carry.

Louisiana AAAA football, I think, compares well nationally in terms of level of competition. It's the second highest level in a State that, most years, is #1 in per capita production of NFL players and maybe in the 5 - 7 range of NFL player production overall. It's a very high talent density State. If you've got a player that rushed for 2,510 yards at 10.2 yards per carry playing on a team that made the AAAA semifinals in Louisiana that's noteworthy.

He did finally get shut down in the semifinal against Lakeshore. But it's obvious that McNeese is very happy to get him. It's the one player the head coach is quoted on the school web site after signing day singling out.
"We feel like we have a very talented group," said Guidry. "There are a few guys that could step in and play right away."

One of those being Trent Winbush of Rayne High School. Winbush flew under the radar for the most part after a stellar senior campaign at Rayne where he set a school rushing record with 2,510 yards along with 32 rushing TDs.

"He can play running back. He can play corner. The Buck safety. And he can play free or weak safety," said Guidry. "This guy can do everything. For us to get this kid, I think it's a steal. We're really excited about him. I think he'll come in and play as a freshman on all special teams if he doesn't push someone for a starting position somewhere."
And, of all things, the McNeese signee list has a guy who rushed for 2,510 yards at 10.2 yards per carry as a "DB."
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth

The player is on the team, but as the stunt you hinted at, the coach is unable or unwilling to offer a scholarship, probably because one is not available.

PWOs aren’t a stunt of any kind.

It’s a guaranteed spot on the roster where as a normal walk on doesn’t have that assurance. They literally try out for the team. PWOs don’t have that worry.

SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA

We had a smaller class than usual but found some nice pieces overall ... some to help immediately, and some projectable high school kids with upside.

Highlights on the transfer side: We added former Fresno State QB, Chason Virgil, to the QB derby ... has 14 FBS starts under his belt and two years of eligibility remaining ... former LSU DB, Xavier Lewis, should help fill a hole at safety ... former TCU and Jones JC LB, Semaj Thomas, should compete for spot at OLB.

On the high school side, the coaches are excited about NG, Dante Carter (6'0, 320) http://www.hudl.com/v/27wMY9 and DB, Donniel Ward-Magee (6'1, 170) http://www.hudl.com/video/3/5376539/5a1 ... 0e08ef9b25 from St. Augustine HS, New Orleans, La, and LB, Joshua Carr (6'3, 220) http://www.hudl.com/video/3/8156680/5a2 ... 094c0fe360 from Westfield HS in Houston. We're also excited about QB Chris Penton (5'11, 185), from Lakeshore HS, Mandeville, La http://www.hudl.com/video/3/8275556/5a3 ... 0ddc6e9d60 ... he's undersized but put up video game numbers against good competition and has very impressive senior tape ... we'll have to see how well his size translates to Division I football, but he's got some Baker Mayfield/Russell Wilson qualities to him.

We also like our three high school OL and high school punter.

We got one of those too. An underneath the radar kid out of LA who went to Torres High to study dance but ended up liking football as well...
In the era of high school students choosing schools specifically for athletic reasons, running back Tiquan Gilmore of Los Angeles Torres has a confession to make.

"I came here to act and dance," he said. "I didn't come to play football."

Yet Gilmore, 18, led the City Section in rushing as a junior, averaging 15.1 yards a carry while gaining 3,266 yards and scoring 33 touchdowns. In one game, he had 409 yards rushing against Sotomayor.

He takes two buses and two trains from his home in South Los Angeles, a 45-minute trip, to reach Torres and attend the school's Performing Arts Magnet.
http://www.latimes.com/sports/highschoo ... story.html

I'm don't get too excited with recruits (See Cooper Kupp and J.C. Sherritt who were on virtually no one's radar) and he's small, but this kid averaged 15 ypc and had 6,000 total yards in two seasons.

Reminds me a little of Taiwan Jones - good vision, effortless cuts, and great speed.

We just added the best punting prospect in the state (Luke Colona, Loranger HS, La.) and have two greyshirts from last year's class, plus another FBS transfer (Devonte Williams, RB, Indiana) ... should have room for 3 or 4 more FBS transfers for either term II or this summer. Should be able to go about 24 or 25 total.

Yes if you've got somebody who averaged 15 ypc playing California high school football it's understandable that you are excited about seeing what he can do.

Is that one SLU guy related to Jefferson Davis Hogg?

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Well this is kind of intriguing:

http://mcneesesports.com/news/2018/2/22 ... teams.aspx

Quarterback of the two time defending Florida 5A championship team. Completed 61% of his passes on a 14-0 team in Florida 5A football. Program has won 27 consecutive games. Yardage stats aren't eye popping at 1504. 1504 in 14 games pretty much suggests his team must've been able to run the football pretty darned well. BUT, he did go 24 of 29 for 257 yards and 5 touchdowns in the State semifinal his team won in triple overtime so that kind of suggests he was able to step up when they needed him.

But he doesn't have any stars.

The only thing I can figure about how he ended up at McNeese is that his head coach, former NFL cornerback Patrick Surtain, went to Edna Karr High School in New Orleans and McNeese has kind of a relationship with that school. As I've noted before it's rare for McNeese to sign someone from more than maybe 250 miles from the school.
