Week 3 - Conference by Conference Breakdown

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Big Sky

EWU 56-21 FORD
UCD 37-14 PORTST
WEB 31-24 SAC
IDST 30-28 NEV
UNI 21-24 SUU
SAV 3-56 UMT
NOCO 21-41 CU
UND 7-45 SDK

  • NConf Record: 4-2
    Overall: 12-21

    vs. FCS: 3-1
    Overall: 8-6

Best Performance: Idaho St. 30, (FBS) Nevada 28 - I remember all of us saying in the preseason, "The Big Sky will get one FBS win this year, and it will come from Idaho State." :?

Worst Performance: Portland St. 14, UC Davis 37 - The seemingly solid Viking defense is shredded by Jake Maier, who put up 316 yards and a 189 efficiency rating.

Most Surprising Result: Idaho St. 30, (FBS) Nevada 28 - This was the Bengals' first DI non-conference win since 2005, largely because they haven't even played an FCS team out of conference since 2008.

Southland

HBU 3-24 ACU
UIW 31-37 SFA
SELU 6-38 UCA
LAM 28-35 NWST
MCNSE 34-27 ALCORN

  • NConf Record: 2-0
    Overall: 8-14

    vs. FCS: 2-0
    Overall: 6-4

Best Performance: (#14) Central Arkansas 38, Southeastern Louisiana 6 - Eight different Bears put up double-digit rushing yardage in a surprisingly easy victory.

Worst Performance: Houston Baptist 3, Abilene Christian 24 - Huskies put up 129 yards against a defense that was nowhere near good last season.

Most Surprising Result: Southeastern Louisiana 6, (#14) Central Arkansas 38 - The Lions played an FBS close, but it's been all downhill from there.

Missouri Valley

UND 7-45 SDK
DRAKE 10-51 SDKST
UNI 21-24 SUU
MUR 21-28 MIZST
ILST 44-13 EIU

    Overall: 18-8

    vs. FCS: 6-1
    Overall: 17-3

Best Performance: (#23) South Dakota 45, (#10) North Dakota 7 - The Coyotes amass 575 yards and commit 0 turnovers against what is supposed to be one of the best defenses in FCS.

Worst Performance: (#21) Northern Iowa 21, Southern Utah 24 - The Panther pass defense did better than expected against Patrick Tyler, but the Panther run offense couldn't even stay out of the red.

Most Surprising Result: (#23) South Dakota 45, (#10) North Dakota 7 - USD has now split the last 4 meetings with UND after losing 13 of the previous 14.

OVC

SIU 35-17 SEMO
ILST 44-13 EIU
MUR 21-28 MIZST
FAMU 13-24 TSU (in Tampa, FL)
TTU 13-28 BALL
UTM 21-7 UTC
MHEAD 13-69 AP

  • NConf Record: 3-4
    Overall: 9-16

    vs. FCS: 3-3
    Overall: 6-7

Best Performance: Tennessee-Martin 21, (#15) Tennessee-Chattanooga 7 - Beating Chattanooga isn't as impressive with Alejandro Bennifield suspended, but this win could still be important for tiebreakers come playoff-selection time.

Worst Performance: Southeast Missouri St. 17, Southern Illinois 35 - This was SEMO's most lopsided FCS loss in almost 2 years, and it came against one of the weaker Missouri Valley teams.

Most Surprising Result: Eastern Illinois 13, (#18) Illinois St. 44 - The Panthers suffer their most lopsided loss to ISU(r) since 1992.

Pioneer League

USD 17-27 PRINCE
DRAKE 10-51 SDKST
VALPO 44-10 tiu
tay 21-27 BUT

    Overall: 12-18

    vs. FCS: 1-6
    Overall: 2-17

Best Performance: Marist 14, Georgetown 12 - After getting whipped by their first Patriot League opponent, the Red Foxes shut down the other one.

Worst Performance: Morehead St. 13, Austin Peay 69 - The Eagles allow 477 rushing yards to a team that was on a 29-game losing streak.

Most Surprising Result: Campbell 16, Presbyterian 28 - The Camels fall to 0-3 against the perennial Big South basement.

Tomorrow: the rest of the playoff conferences.

Central Arkansas is interesting. I think the opening season score blowout at the hands of Kansas State is a little deceptive. They were able to run the ball for 223 yards against Kansas State, held a 28 to 16 edge in first downs, and had a 37:13 to 22:47 edge in time of possession. They were tied at 10 at the end of the first and were in the game 16 to 24 in the second until they gave up two big plays in the form of a 62 yard punt return then a 70 yard TD pass in the final 2 minutes of the half. And BTW that punt return was the second big return that resulted in points as Kansas State returned the opening kickoff to the Central Arkansas 4 yard line.

The point, I think, is that Central Arkansas was able to play physically with Kansas State up front. They just couldn't stop the big plays in the passing game and on special teams. In addition to the big kickoff return to open the game along with the big punt return and the 70 yard TD pass just before halftime Central Arkansas gave up a 55 yard TD pass in the second quarter and a 69 yard TD pass in the third.

It wasn't Kansas State physically pushing them around. It was 35 points due to five big plays.

UCA is kinda unique right now because they're quietly moving up the rankings while everyone else is jumping all over the place.

One never knows. Last year I watched UCA play McNeese and watched Sam Houston State play McNeese and UCS looked better against the Cowboys. A LOT better. A lot more physical. A lot better on defense. I really expected UCA to beat Sam Houston State when the two played because UCA looked like a better, more balanced team that could both run and pass as well as play defense while Sam Houston State looked pretty much like a good passing game and nothing else.

But when they played Sam Houston State blew UCA out.

Kind of like Nicholls State looked a whole lot better against Prairie View this past weekend than Sam Houston State looked against Prairie View the week before. But now what's going to happen when the two play this weekend? History says favor Sam Houston. But it'll be interesting to see if Nicholls State can win.

I don't think I need to tell you the college efficiency rating formula is completely different. :|

JMU definitely wasn't running up the score. At the half (44-7) the yardage was 377-37. Starting offense scored with 12:15 in the 3rd qtr to make it 51-7, and the next possession the backups started coming in. By late 3rd quarter (61-7) it was entire backups (2nd-3rd string) on offense. By early 4th quarter it was entire backups on both sides of the ball. On JMU's last TD to make it 75-14 I saw 2nd & 3rd string OL, 3rd string QB, 3rd-4th string WR, 4th and 5th TE, 5th RB..Even on special teams JMU went backups. At 68-7 JMU put their BACKUP kickoff team in (mostly 3rd string guys) and NSU ran the kick back. Postgame Mike Houston said that every non redshirt player on the roster got in the game and saw significant action on the field.

5 TDs have been scored on JMU in 3 games, but the starting defense has only given up 1 TD..Of 5 TDs scored by opponents:
-ECU (25 yd TD drive after INT, only TD given up by starting defense).
-ECU (last possession, score 34-7, drove length of field to score TD with 23 seconds left on JMU's 2nd/3rd string).
-ETSU (Pick 6 TD).
-NSU (Scoop and score TD off JMU fumble).
-NSU (Kick return TD on JMU's backup kickoff team).

Offense is close to as good as last year, defense is better, best the school has ever put on the field, and haven't even gotten the last of the suspended players back (will by the 2nd half of Maine or next week vs UD). Not saying going to win another NC, but this JMU team is better than last year..
..peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard..
..But you have to go home now. We have to have peace…
..I know how you feel, but go home, and go home in peace.

JMU is the clear favorite. No question about that.
