My gut says he's in really bad shape. I'm not sure the cage is designed to absorb wall damage at that high of a speed and a full-speed hit by a 3200 lb missile (at the driver's side nonetheless). Obviously hope he's ok but like you said, absolutely brutal.

Still, shows how much safety goes into the cars that he wasn't instantly vaporized at the second impact.
How's your gut feel now?
Nobody thought Newman was walking out of the hospital in two days when he took the Lajoie impact on his driver window. Nobody.

The truck race on Fri, after 3 wrecks of 9 or more trucks, 1 that resulted on a truck on its roof skidding down the track in a shower of sparks, and the biggest wreck with 2 laps to go that caused a red flag & a Green/White/Checkered overtime, after 250 miles, the difference between 1st and 2nd .01 second.

Xfinity race Sat also had a Big One & red flag, but no photo finish.
The 500 had the 2 Big Ones (1 that involved 19 cars), 2 red flags (both in the last 17 laps), 2 overtimes, Newman's crash, and after 500 miles, less than .014 second:

I always thought Danica might get her first win at a superspeedway, as they require the least amount of driving skill, and often only a third of the field makes it to the end.

But no, she couldn't even do that once. That's how lousy she was in NASCAR.

He won't be racing on Sunday at least. The Watermelon man will run race the #6 car in Vegas:
Chastain, who splits his time between NASCAR's top three national series, has won two Xfinity Series races and three Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series races and finished runner-up for the Truck Series championship in 2019. One of his two Xfinity wins came at Las Vegas, where he dominated by leading 180 of 200 laps in 2018.

"No one could ever take the place of Ryan Newman on the track, and I can’t wait to have him back," Chastain tweeted Wednesday after the announcement. "As we continue to pray for a full and speedy recovery, I’ll do my best to make him and everyone at Roush Fenway Racing proud.

Mercedes surprises everyone at testing in Spain with a new system called DAS that adjusts camber (and possibly toe) on the fly by the driver pushing/pulling the steering wheel. Nobody has been able to immediately rule it illegal per the rules for 2020, though FIA has already said it will be illegal for 2021. It would take most of the season to copy, so Mercedes may have an advantage for some time.

Joey Logano punches his ticket to the Chase early with a repeat victory at the first Las Vegas race.

This is sweet. Now I don't have to pay attention to NASCAR until September. Thanks Joey!

Interesting. I guess there is a fuss about Ferrari's engine and how it logs its data or something. They settled with FiA about it, also people think Ferrari were sandbagging during testing.

I wasn't going to get too excited for F1 but the 2nd season of the Netflix series "F1: Drive to Survive" came out so now I think I'm ready to rock and roll for the Australia GP next weekend. A few questions for the F1 folks out there:

Do you think Albon will preform enough to have Red Bull competing with Mercedes and Ferrari for the Constructor Cup? I'm hoping they will so I say yes.

Which team will be the best of the rest? I'm going with McClaren. The Renault car looks sweet, but I think Ocon has too many screw ups to left that team to the front of the midfield.

Which team will suck the most? I'm going with Haas. Grosjean should have been shit canned after last season, but I think they have another awful year. I think this will be Haas' last year in F1.

NASCAR going with a single lug 18" forged aluminum wheel next season for the Next Gen car replacing the five lug 15" steel wheels that they have used since forever.

It's funny. I like constant change in F1 but hate it in NASCAR.

Red Bull and Honda improved pretty dramatically last year. Honda was completely embarrassed by their power units supplied to McClaren 3-5 years ago and heads rolled in Japan. I think Honda power is every bit as good as Mercedes and Ferrari now, until it pops. It's just a matter of reliability in the Red Bull cars now. Max had too many DNFs. And I think Alex Albon is a fine driver. I don't quite see Red Bull winning the Constructor's, but 2nd is a distinct possibility. I just think that on the final year of the current rules package and with a 7th championship awaiting Hamilton, Mercedes will have another unstoppable year. The fight will again be for 2nd.

The fight for 4th will def be between McClaren and Renault. Lando Norris is fun to watch.

As far as the worst team, c'mon. It's going to be Williams. At least Haas cars are pretty fast up until the moment Grosjean wrecks. Or Magnussen wrecks him for being a French twat. :D

Grosjean/Haas is the worst contract in F1. A budding American F1 team, and they picked not only a Frenchman, but one of the most unlikeable Frenchmen ever. I can never root for Haas until they dump that guy.

F1 starts this week. Practice 1 from Australia is Thursday night at 9pm EST on ESPNN.

Australia GP is going on as normal (so far) despite the corona virus concerns.

Bahrain GP (race #2) has announced it will be held without spectators.

No word yet on Vietnam GP (race #3).

Chinese GP (original race #4) has been canceled.

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Five members of the Formula One paddock have now been tested for coronavirus after two more Haas employees reported potential symptoms on Thursday morning in Melbourne.

The results of two Haas team members and a McLaren team member, who were tested on Wednesday, are expected later on Thursday and could dictate whether this weekend's season-opening Australian Grand Prix goes ahead.

Speaking before the news broke of the additional Haas team members being tested, Brett Sutton, chief health officer for the state of Victoria, told Melbourne radio station 3AW that any positive tests among the F1 community could result in the race being called off.

So now they don't have to explain why nobody comes to the races. That has to be a relief.

Yeah, as of yesterday they were going with major tweaks as far as the fans, drivers & garage goes, but this afternoon announced no fans. So instead of 1/2 to 3/4 empty grandstands, they'll have totally empty grandstands..

And with it being about the only live sports on TV, viewership will be up. Win-win..
