My gut says he's in really bad shape. I'm not sure the cage is designed to absorb wall damage at that high of a speed and a full-speed hit by a 3200 lb missile (at the driver's side nonetheless). Obviously hope he's ok but like you said, absolutely brutal.

Still, shows how much safety goes into the cars that he wasn't instantly vaporized at the second impact.

In the Twitter I posted, you can see the lateral flex in the car's frame when Lajoie hits him, and his driver side took all of that impact. Furthermore, most of the neck braces built into the seats are biased to the driver's right side, not left. Scary stuff.

Supposedly he's in the trauma unit at Halifax (basically across the street from the track). Some Twitter reports say he was awake at some point, but I don't really trust the Twitter warriors much. I'll wait for official word.

I'm guessing he survives but is out the rest of this season, and might retire. He and his wife just separated four days ago too.

Newman is in serious but stable condition. Injuries non-life threatening.

Whew.

Good stuff.

Pretty amazing how much goes into the safety of motorsports. Nothing guaranteed, but remarkable nonetheless.

It's a shame it took the death of Dale Earnhardt for NASCAR to get serious about HANS restraints and SAFER barriers.

Newman's first impact with the wall was likely harder than Earnhardt's, but all the energy was absorbed by the SAFER barrier instead of being transferred to the driver.

The secondary impact with Lajoie though... holy shit. That's where the HANS made some money. Also, the fuel cell, though that technology was around before Earnhardt.

Is that the same guy that did the "Short People" song?

They got little baby legs
And they stand so low
You got to pick 'em up
Just to say hello
They got little cars
That go beep, beep, beep
They got little voices
Goin' peep, peep, peep
They got grubby little fingers
And dirty little minds
They're gonna get you every time

I always liked that song

Au contraire, mon frere! The cunt was probay rubbing her little hands together over her copy of his multi-million dollar life insurance property around 9pm last night.

Now he still gets a chance to remove her as a beneficiary. That was the FIRST thing I did after my divorce. I changed beneficiary on everything to my parents.

The latest news is that Newman is awake and talking.
Still haven't heard anything about where his injuries are other than, likely, the head.

Good to see...

NASCAR driver Ryan Newman was fully alert and walking around Wednesday, two days after his horrific last-lap crash at the Daytona 500.

Roush Fenway Racing released a statement Wednesday that said Newman "continues to show great improvement" and is "fully alert and walking around Halifax Medical Center." The racing team also posted a photo of Newman and his two daughters on its Twitter account.

How's your gut feel now?
