I'll pick France over Belgium and Croatia over England in the semis. France over Croatia in the final.

Re: 2018 World Cup
I watch very little Olympics or World Cup, but here's something I just noticed that makes no sense. During the Olympics the Brits are carrying/wearing/waving the Union jack:
The athletes use it. The medal ceremonies use it. The fans wave & wear it. They don't wear/wave the St George cross. Seems all the royal stuff & govt buildings use the Union Jack. It covers the coffins of Brits killed in combat, not the St George cross. On and on. Just like our Stars and Stripes.
But in the World Cup, all the Brits are wearing & waving the St George Cross. The Union Jack isn't to be found. So why a different flag for the Brits for the World Cup versus the Olympics, and it seems most of everything else..

Difference between the Great Britain and England. World Cup is England. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own teams that attempt to qualify. Olympics is Great Britain which is composed of the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Caymans, BVI, and Bermuda.BDKJMU wrote:I watch very little Olympics or World Cup, but here's something I just noticed that makes no sense. They're the world's 2 biggest international competitions. It doesn't make sense why they wouldn't do the same for both.tribe_pride wrote:Difference between the Great Britain and England. So - the English are waving their flag. Does that make sense?

England was very pleasant and had a much lower population density until the greasy Roman descendants who were overflowing and disgruntled in Jersey began moving out and flooding the mainland.CAA Flagship wrote:tribe_pride wrote: Difference between the Great Britain and England. OK, nice digression on UK geography that’s now resolved.
So I picked the Frogs (les Grenouilles) to win it all. Who you got?

Ok, but why are they not doing the the same for the Olympics. Give the athletes the opportunity to compete for their 4 respective countries? Would give up to 4x as many athletes the opportunity to compete..Skjellyfetti wrote:History.

Re: 2018 World Cup
That's a good explanation. It describes Great Britain as England/Scotland/Wales. It says Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain. Yet during the Olympics Northern Ireland competes with England/Scotland/Wales and you always hear the UK team referred to as Great Britain which doesn't make any sense, since it includes Northern Ireland. It would make sense if it was referred to as the UK team..93henfan wrote:https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/H ... ifference/

Again, read the early history of soccer if you are genuinely interested in this question. No one is going to type it out for you. It's not analogous to the Olympics.BDKJMU wrote:Ok, but why are they not doing the the same for the Olympics. Give the athletes the opportunity to compete for their 4 respective countries? If it says Northern Ireland isn't a part of the UK then that's incorrect - unless we are drawing a distinction between Great Britain and the United Kingdom.BDKJMU wrote:That's a good explanation. It’s really not that difficult.
The fact that Northern Ireland is a part of the UK is proving to be the biggest stumbling block to Brexit - how to handle the border between Northern Ireland and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Ireland.
