Hell yeah, F1 is back. Exciting qualifying at Australia. Bottas crashes in Q3, Ferrari looked like they were Mercedes' equal in Q2, but then Q3 was Hammertime. LH44 wins the pole by 0.6 secs, setting a new track record, but will not have teammate Bottas nearby to assist in the race (likely grid penalties coming for gearbox change).

Vettel wins by better pit strategy at Australia. Hamilton dominated until he pitted. Then there was a stopped car that brought out VSC and Vettel was able to pit and get back on the track just ahead of Hamilton, who had to maintain a slower speed. Cheap win, but a win nevertheless.

Looking at racing-reference.info, 48 years 1960-2007, 47 times the Spring Martinsville race was held in April (mostly mid-late April), and 1 time in May. 6 of the last 10 Spring races 08’-17’ were held in April. 4 were held March 29-30. This year NASCAR schedules the race on 3/25, the earliest ever in its history, and it snows. Its bad enough that the fall race is the last weekend in Oct/1st weekend in Nov. Last year was on 10/29 (I was there). Delayed due to rain. Ended at night- was the upper 30s, wery windy, wind chill in the low 20s...

After the west coast swing it would have made since to at a minimum at least swap Martinsville & TX. Have TX this week on the way back from the west coast, instead of TX next week. Martinsville is too far north and close to the mtns to be doing in late March..That should be a mid April race at the earliest, and an mid Oct race at the lastest.

They’re going to have Vegas in mid Sept when it’s likely going to be over 100..That should be an Oct or Nov race.

NASCAR could do a much better job scheduling races in terms of track locations/time of year/probable weather.

Ok, William Byron? At Autoclub he ran his primary sponsor (I believe for most of the season) Axalta. At Martinsville his primary is Liberty Univ, which he ran at Atlanta.

Martinsville results:
1. Clint Bowyer: Leads 215 of 500 laps, breaks 190 race winless streak. Popular win with the fans.
2. Kyle Busch: Led 24 laps, last 4 weeks 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd.
3. Ryan Blaney: Led 145 laps, won 2nd stage.

11. Hamlin led 111 laps, won 1st stage, would have been a contender at the end, but suffered front end damage from being brake checked by Harvick in the final stage.

Stewart Haas continues to be the best team. Has now won 4 of the 1st 6 races. All 4 drivers top 14. Almirola 14th depite 2 speeding penalties.

Points standings after 6 races of 26 races regular season. Only 1 Chevy in top 12.

Remember Harvick was penalized 20 regular season points. Without the penalties it would be:
1. Kyle Busch: 257
2. Truex 259
3. Blaney 233
4. Harvick 232
5. Logano 232

As far as the playoffs are concerned, playoff points are considered 1st, then regular season points. This is how Fox showed the standings post race (Remember Harvick was penalized 7 playoff points). Really, this is the only way the points standings should be displayed.

Also after the last regular season race at Indy, will have playoff bonus points awarded to the following:
15 for 1st place regular season points.
10 for 2nd place regular season points.
8 for 3rd place regular season points.
7 for 4th place regular season points.
6 for 5th place regular season points.
5 for 6th place regular season points.
4 for 7th place regular season points
3 for 8th place regular season points.
2 for 9th place regular season points.
1 for 10th place regular season points.

So if the playoffs started next weekend it would be seeded by playoff points:
1. Truex 17
2. Kyle Busch: 16
3. Harvick: 15 (Without the penalties would be 1st with 25 (7 playoff point penalty +3 more from being 4th instead of 7th regular season standings due to 20 regular season point penalty).
4. Blaney 10
5. Bowyer 8
6. Logano 7
7. Keselowski 7
8. Hamlin 6
9. Dillon 5
10. Kurt Busch 3
11. Larson 2
12. Almirola
13. Jones
14. Bowman
15. Menard
16. Newman
Johnson would be 1st out..

Penske cars are the most consistent as a team, but they need to start winning some races. They just don’t have the horsepower that the Toyota’s do.

NASCAR Prodigy
http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2018/04/04/ ... ss?src=rss

The piece says "most “cup drivers” are from Southern states". Wrong. Of the top 35 in the standings, I see only 11 from "southern states". A doz if you include McMurray from Missouri.

The piece says of the Pro Late Model Series "think of it like the minor leagues of NASCAR". Well, sort of. It isn't one of NASCAR's sanctioned series. If you were going to put it in baseball terms it could be something like:
A Low/rookie ball: The Pro Late Model this kid is racing (along with a # of other series).
A High: K&N Pro Series East & West (along with the roughly equivalent level non NASCAR ARCA)
AA: Trucks
AAA: Xfinity
Major Leagues: Cup

The piece could have mentioned that cup is about 4 levels up..Someone reading that who knows nothing about NASCAR could think next step for the kid is Cup..

Watching race hub this week I heard voters say things considered things like # of Cup championships, lower level championships, # of Cup wins, Cup winning percentage (were some great drivers who had careers cut short), career top 10s, Triple Crown wins, etc..
1. Richard Petty (1958-1992): 1,184 races, 200 wins, 7 championships.
2. Jimmie Johnson (2001-current): 586 races, 83 wins, 7 championships.
3. David Pearson (1960-1986): 574 races, 105 wins, 3 championships.
4. Jeff Gordon (1992-2016): 805 races, 93 wins, 4 championships, 1993 Rookie of the Year
5. Dale Earnhardt Sr (1975-2001): 676 races, 76 wins, 7 championships.
6. Darrell Walltrip (1972-2000): 809 races, 84 wins, 3 championships.
7. Cale Yarborough (1957-1988): 560 races, 83 wins, 3 championships.
8. Bobby Allison (1961-1988) 718 races, 84 wins, 1 championship.
9. Tony Stewart (1999-2016) 618 races, 49 wins, 3 championships, 1999 Rookie of the Year
10. Lee Petty (1949-1964): 427 races, 54 wins, 3 championships.
11. Ned Jarett (1952-1966): 352 races, 50 wins, 2 championships.
My major disagreement with the Top 5 would be having Earnhardt 3rd instead of 5th..Here's how I would have the top 11.
1. Richard Petty
2. Jimmie Johnson
3. Dale Earnhardt Sr
4. David Pearson
5. Jeff Gordon
6. Cale Yarborough
7. Darrell Walltrip
8. Tony Stewart
9. Lee Petty
10. Ned Jarett
11. Bobby Allison

Interesting to see that the view from the inside is similar from the view from the outside.

https://sports.yahoo.com/kevin-harvick- ... 13036.html
After qualifying second Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway, Harvick was asked who could be the next driver to “move the needle” like a Tiger Woods in golf.

He said there was one active driver who could, and one former driver who had the chance but didn’t.

“The guy that has the most potential is Chase Elliott with the traditional NASCAR fans,” Harvick said. “There’s a difference between a superstar and an megastar. In the past, a superstar wasn’t a megastar because of the fact that he didn’t win enough. Chase Elliott is the next guy that can be a megastar, but you have to win.

“When you have a guy like Tiger Woods, he’s won and won and won and won and won and won. Danica (Patrick) had a personality. She didn’t perform well. She could have been a megastar as well. Danica didn’t perform well. In the end, performance trumped superstar to megastar. And if you want to be a megastar you have to perform and win. That’s the effect that a guy like Tiger Woods has.”

Patrick was Harvick’s SHR teammate for the past four seasons before retiring after this year’s Daytona 500.

It isn’t the first time Harvick has spoken out about the need for popularity to be linked to winning. Last year, he said Dale Earnhardt Jr. had “stunted” NASCAR’s growth because he lacked a championship (Earnhardt recently said the comment still stung).

Harvick clarified some of his position Friday, explaining that neither he nor seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson could become megastars because they lacked the necessary pedigree.

“It’s something that when you look at a guy like Jimmie Johnson — and Jimmie and I have had this conversation — we don’t have that capability from that traditional, roots family standpoint that you can be that guy,” he said. “There’s only a few people that come through the sport that can be that guy. Jeff Gordon came through, but he won a lot in the beginning. He was that young guy that kept winning and won championships and had that immediate impact as far as catching everyone’s attention.

“After you get in here for a few years and don’t catch everyone’s attention you just kind of wind up being one of the guys unless you end up winning a lot.”

Ferrari better than Mercedes in qualifying at Bahrain. Plus Hamilton gets a five grid place penalty for changing his gearbox, so will start the race 9th tomorrow. Ugh.

Ok, William Byron? At Autoclub he ran his primary sponsor (I believe for most of the season) Axalta. At Martinsville his primary is Liberty Univ, which he ran at Atlanta.
BDK for the win.

Exciting race in Bahrain. Vettel holds on for the win with Bottas in DRS range. Over 40 laps on softs for Vettel to finish. Hamilton from 9th to 3rd.

Raikkonen retires after running over a pit crewman on an improper release. Left rear wheel was never able to come off, but they gave him the go sign. Bad miscommunication. Granted, three seconds isn't a lot of time to think.

Red Bull was just a disaster. Both cars retired in the first couple of laps.

McClaren in the points with both cars again.

The Raikkonen crewman ended up with a broken shinbone and fibula. The team was fined for the unsafe release.

Article w/ video. Not sure how gruesome it is. I watched it live and decided not to watch it again: https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/head ... lease.html

Raikkonen is getting all kinds of negative press for being "emotionless" after the incident, but that's the way he always is. They don't call him The Iceman because he's emotional.

2018 NASCAR/INDYCAR/F1

Can’t really see anything from the video. I saw it live and it took 5 minutes for them to show a replay. I assumed they weren’t going back because it was bad. There are so many other people in the area you don’t really see anything.

I also found F1 to be quite boring.

Landon hitting P21 though was nice.

The most interesting thing about the F1 race was that from green flag through checkered flag there were NO commercial breaks. No side-by-side. None at all. It was even more coma inducing than usual.

F1 has no commercials this year (so far) because ESPN took over from NBC and they are simply piping in the world feed from Sky Sports UK. There are no planned commercial breaks. I’m guessing ESPN will find a way to creatively squeeze some in eventually.

Agree that Bahrain wasn’t the most exciting race ever, though the end was very competitive with Bottas in DRS range and Vettel’s tires falling off badly. Also nice to see a triple overtake by Hamilton mid-race and a podium finish starting from 9th. Competition was diminished somewhat at the front of the field with Raikkonen retiring early and both Red Bull’s doing the same.

F1 is still far more engaging now than what NASCAR has become. I’ve only watched two NASCAR races this year and a brief part of the third one. I couldn’t even tell you what happened Sunday. I do know they raced at Texas and that’s it. With a Chase format I cannot stand, going on 15 years now, a stage format that is completely artificial and cheesy, Toyota dominating the sport, wildly arbitrary rules enforcement, and commercial, after commercial, after commercial, I’m all done following fervently. It’s too much of a chore for too little return.

I enjoy F1, but it's certainly not everyone's cup of tea. You really have to appreciate technological superiority because in the end, it's typically a race between one or two teams.

One thing I do enjoy about NASCAR over F1/INDY is that it's still a bit dumb. You're driving a behemoth vehicle with an old school 4-speed manual transmission, clutch pedal, regular stick shift, and a chassis with a fairly low tolerance for driver mistakes.

You want to see some awesome racing though? Supercars Championship (which is having a resurgence) and the absolutely bonkers Stadium Super Trucks are two great series to check out.
