The US might have some good company to sit on a couch and watch the other teams that made the World Cup. Obviously The Netherlands has already crashed and burned, but now Italy might be on the verge of missing for the first time since 1958 - they lost 1-0 to Sweden today in Sweden in the first leg of the qualifying playoff. Second leg in a few days but could be dicey, especially if Sweden finds that road goal to score where tonight Italy didn't.

I'm sure it will piss you off to no end that soccer will continue in some form in this country. It's like how some people feel about hockey continuing in this country. :coffee:

Why would it piss me off? What I'm pissed off about is quite the opposite GF. The US was ready to leave the nest a long time ago and instead of flying they fell to their death. Now we're back to an egg sitting there. :coffee:

Italy just joined the US and Netherlands on the sideline...Sweden knocked them out.

The World Cup is without Italy for the first time in 60 years.

First time since 1958 that Italy are not in the World Cup, and just 11 years ago Italy was hoisting the championship trophy. Couldn't score a goal in either playoff game against Sweden.

Oh, and not a feather in soccer's cap, in the last 6 World Cup playoff games, or the last 569 minutes (9.5 hours) there has not been a goal scored. Not a one. Sometimes international soccer is the worse version of soccer.

Honduras 0-0 Australia
New Zealand 0-0 Peru
Denmark 0-0 Ireland
Switzerland 0-0 N Ireland
Greece 0-0 Croatia
Italy 0-0 Sweden

As far as wops go I have a lot of respect for Buffon. Kind of sad to see his career (probably) end like that.

That's why the UEFA Champions League is light-years better than the World Cup (besides being annual and not tied to corrupt FIFA)...

Yes, the World Cup gets all the glam and the flag waving and it's all very Olympic-like in its appeal. However, as the soccer goes, it's not even in the realm of the best soccer to watch. It's almost like saying the Pro-Bowl is the best football game all year to watch.

World Cup Draw is done:

Group A: Russia, Uruguay, Egypt, Saudi Arabia
Group B: Portugal, Spain, Iran, Morrocco
Group C: France, Peru, Denmark, Australia
Group D: Argentina, Croatia, Iceland, Nigeria
Group E: Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia
Group F: Germany, Mexico, Sweden, S. Korea
Group G: Belgium, England, Tunisia, Panama
Group H: Poland, Colombia, Senegal, Japan

First game will be Russia/Saudi Arabia (not exactly appointment tv). Interesting matchups in first round are Spain/Portugal, Argentia/Nigeria (for the 1000th time), Germany/Mexico, Belgium/England, and even Poland/Colombia.

Could be real interesting round of 16 games. Runner-up in Group F would likely play Brazil so that would be a Brazil/Germany rematch or maybe Brazil/Mexico. Runner-up in Group G would be put on Germany's side of the bracket and could see them in quarterfinals. Possible Spain/Argentina matchup in quarters as well.

I sort of assumed the above post would be about US Soccer since it's in the US Soccer thread.

I don't see any mention of US Soccer though.

We're 97 pages into this, I'm sure I can spot a few posts in those 97 pages that didn't deal with US Soccer. We should talk to the admin about this. We wouldn't want threads to be about one thing and then all of a sudden morph into something else. Imagine the chaos that could result if this starts happening to other threads in other forums!

Soccer in the United States has suffered a significant setback after the men's national team failed to qualify for the World Cup this summer, former coach Jurgen Klinsmann has said....

And Klinsmann told German newspaper kicker that being left out of the World Cup in Russia will have implications on the growth of soccer in the country for a long time.

Jurgen's just sad because another opportunity hasn't arisen for him and he's not in the World Cup either this time around. For a guy who's largely responsible himself for the US not making the World Cup this time, I don't think he's the best seer for what's ahead for the US.
