Changing of the Guard at Liberty

Post by SuperHornet »

Back at the beginning of March, Liberty fired HC Dale Layer, who stands as the second-best game-winner in school history. Unfortunately, that translated into a record of 82-113 over six seasons. Layer is 352-306 over 22 years at three schools (1989-1988 at Queens College, 2000-2007 at CO State, and 2009-2015 at Liberty). He did take Liberty to the NCAAs in 2013 and was Big South Coach of the Year in 2011. Layer was huge on player involvement in the community. The current multi-year APR is 971, while the single-year APR has been as high as 980 during Layer's tenure.

The Flames have scheduled a presser for tomorrow to announce their new HC.

New coach; same as the old coach.

Liberty has re-hired former HC Ritchie McKay (he was Liberty HC 2007-2009). McKay's last post was associate HC at UVA.

McKay was 39-28, 19-13 Big South, in his first stint on Liberty Mountain. His second season showed improvement from .500 to 23-12 and a berth in the CIT, where the Flames beat Rider in the first round. Prior to Liberty, McKay was HC at Portland State (1996-1998, reinstating the program after a 15-year absence), CO State (1999-2000), OR State (2000-2002), and New Mexico (2002-2007). McKay took New Mexico to the NCAAs in 2005.
