Good, bad day for Kats

SHSU coach pleased with effort, not with amount of penalties during first scrimmage
By Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor

Sam Houston State coach Todd Whitten wasn’t too happy following the Bearkats’ first intrasquad scrimmage Saturday morning. But Whitten’s bad mood had nothing to do with the players’ effort or their performance.

The Bearkats’ third-year coach was upset with the number of penalties his team committed. In fact, all of the players had to run extra once the scrimmage was over for the double-digit number of flags thrown during the two-hour workout at Bowers Stadium.

“The first time you have the officials out, that happens,” Whitten said. “I thought it was way excessive today and that is not acceptable. Certainly I understand why it happened. We have a lot of work to do and have to get better. Nevertheless, we aren’t going to be a team that gets penalized a whole bunch.

“But I thought the guys worked hard and we saw some good things out here. I was really pleased with our top two quarterbacks.”
