CP 38-45 UNI (OT)
USD 7-35 UCD

    NConf Record: 4-8
    Overall: 8-19

    vs. FCS: 4-4
    Overall: 5-5

Best Performance: (#11) North Dakota 34, Missouri St. 0 - The Hawks outgain the Bears 526-211 in a surprisingly easy victory.

Worst Performance: (#7) Eastern Washington 13, (#2) North Dakota St. 40 - Not only did the Eagles lose rushing yardage (375-70), they lost passing yardage too.

Most Surprising Result: Northern Arizona 20, (#22) Western Illinois 38 - Delayed sophomore slump? Case Cookus has a paltry 114.9 efficiency rating after 2 games.

Southland

HBU 24-17 TXSO
ACU 10-38 CSU
SUU 51-14 SFA
SHSU 44-31 PVAMU

NICH 14-24 TAMU

    NConf Record: 5-6
    Overall: 6-14

    vs. FCS: 3-4
    Overall: 4-4

Best Performance: Nicholls St. 14, (FBS) Texas A&M 24 - Although it's true Texas A&M was on a short week coming off a loss where they blew a 34-point lead, it's still impressive that the Colonels have played their last 3 FBS opponents close.

Worst Performance: Incarnate Word 22, Sacramento St. 56 - The Cardinals still have yet to win an FCS non-conference game since joining the Southland.

Most Surprising Result: (#3) Sam Houston St. 44, Prairie View A&M 31 - I don't think anyone expected the Bearkats to beat Richmond by more than they beat Prairie View.

Missouri Valley

NDSU 40-13 EWU
SDK 35-27 BGSU
SDKST 31-27 MTST
CP 38-45 UNI (OT)

    Overall: 12-6

    vs. FCS: 6-1
    Overall: 11-2

Best Performance: (#22) Western Illinois 38, Northern Arizona 20 - The Leathernecks weather the altitude, keep Case Cookus in check, and win rushing 207-57 just for good measure.

Worst Performance: Missouri St. 0, (#11) North Dakota 34 - The Bear offense follows up a 6-touchdown performance against an SEC team by getting blanked against a Big Sky team. :?

Most Surprising Result: South Dakota 35, (FBS) Bowling Green 27 - Chris Streveler puts up 425 yards of total offense and 4 total touchdowns for the Coyotes.

OVC

AP 10-31 MIAMIU

    NConf Record: 1-8
    Overall: 6-12

    vs. FCS: 1-3
    Overall: 3-4

Best Performance: (#23) Tennessee St. 17, Jackson St. 15 - TSU wins a 6th. straight Southern Heritage Classic despite completing just 29% of their passes.

Worst Performance: Murray St. 13, (#15) Central Arkansas 41 - The Racers fall to 0-4-1 against UCA all-time.

Most Surprising Result: Eastern Kentucky 16, (FBS) Kentucky 27 - Two straight losses to FBSers by just two scores could be an encouraging sign for Eastern Kentucky's conference schedule.

Pioneer League

USD 7-35 UCD
swks 14-55 DRAKE
DUQ 45-40 VALPO
BUT 43-24 frank
SEMO 23-25 DAY

DVDSN 17-63 WCU
GTOWN 16-10 CAMP
MHEAD 17-58 LIB

    NConf Record: 3-5
    Overall: 7-12

    vs. FCS: 1-4
    Overall: 1-11

Best Performance: Dayton 25, Southeast Missouri St. 23 - The Flyers get an interception on a late 2-point try to preserve the PFL's only DI non-conference win.

Worst Performance: Stetson 17, Marist 38 - Hatters lose their 6th. in a row.

Most Surprising Result: San Diego 7, UC Davis 35 - The Toreros fall to 1-5 against the Aggies in surprisingly uncompetitive fashion.

Tomorrow: the rest of the playoff conferences.

Key to the game was time of possession. Here's from a Mike McFeely article, and NDSU Division I era record.

Link

Some eye-popping statistics tell the story:

NDSU had a 42:40 to 17:20 edge in time of possession, a record advantage in TOP in the Bison’s Division I era.

That doesn’t tell the entire story. Eastern Washington actually had the TOP advantage after the first quarter, 7:37 to 7:23. That means the Eagles possessed the ball for only 9:43 total over the game’s final three quarters.

But wait, there’s more. NDSU’s edge only got greater in the second half. Eastern had the ball a total of 5:21 in the second half.

Not done yet. Eastern had the ball for 1:43 in the fourth quarter. The Eagles’ TOP numbers looked like this from the first quarter to the fourth: 7:37, 4:22, 3:38, 1:43.

McNeese had a 40:06 to 19:54 edge in time of possession and a 24 to 14 edge in first downs in their first game of the season against Nicholls State and LOST the flipping game due to giving up a couple of long pass plays and a long pick six for a TD. It was EXTREMELY frustrating because in that game they were clearly the physically dominant team but they went home 0-1.

At least Nicholls State showed they may be a pretty good team this past week at Texas A&M. But still. That opening game for McNeese was a "no way you should've lost that one" type of thing.

Most Surprising Result: (#3) Sam Houston St. 44, Prairie View A&M 31 - I don't think anyone expected the Bearkats to beat Richmond by more than they beat Prairie View.

I agree with the expectation thing. But Prairie View was the more physical team. When they were on offense they really pushed Sam Houston State around in the running game.

Anyway we'll see what happens as the year goes on but Sam Houston State's defense is now averaging giving up 575.5 yards and 32.5 points per game for its first two games.

Sam Houston State is just fortunate that Prairie View made so many mistakes. If Prairie View had played "clean" as Keeler likes to say when talking about his own team we'd be talking about Sam Houston State losing to a SWAC team right now.
