How Bad is the Big Sky Going to Be?

Post by kalm »

EWU gets rolled, looking bad in every facet of the game.
NAU gets rolled by a crappy UofA.
UND's stingy D gives up 500 yards and their power rushing attack has only 55 at 2.0 ypc.
Cal Poly 0-2
Montana is in a close one late in the third quarter against...non-schollie, Pioneer League, Valpo.

Sure there were a couple of blowouts against lower division opponents and PSU has looked solid in it's two FBS losses but still...

I have to say, Portland State looks to be the best in the conference right now. Of course, they've played one more game than most of the rest, and most people would have had them at 0-2 right now which is right where they are. But still, I'd have to say they are looking pretty good right now.

The only things I take from the first week is that Cal Poly might have been a little over rated, and PSU looks pretty solid.

I still think the teams at the top of the conference will still be really good teams, but there might also be some surprise teams. (cough cough Weber cough cough)

Still a lot of football to be played.

I am now very interesting in Weber's game this weekend at Cal. Cal was supposed to be rebuilding and they went in to North Carolina and won. They are not NAIA level for sure. Still, Weber should hang close, but that's what I thought Southern Utah, NAU and North Dakota would do against the Pac-12 this past weekend.

You're like the CAA without JMU.

By that, I mean you suck really bad.

It was nice to see a Beau Baldwin and Nick Edwards Cal offense come out of the gates swinging. The QB play, play calling, and stat lines looked familiar. With their schedule after Cal, Weber could go on a streak and head into the Griz game in Ogden at 6-1.

My thoughts

EWU - That loss was concerning. Scoring just 10 against one of the worst defenses in FBS suggests some issues.

PSU - I guess Barney-ball could be an odd-year wonder. They have a freshman QB, though, so I'm not real bullish on them.

Poly - Their defense might be better than I thought, but their offense looks quite a bit worse.

Davis - They avoided getting rolled by SDSU, but who knows if that means anything.

Sac - Nothing of interest yet.

ISU - Kinda like Montana: the game was going bad for a while, but ended up OK.

SUU - Defense got shredded a lot worse than I expected, though I guess Oregon could be good again.

Weebs - A humiliating win that isn't real informative.

NAU - Their loss ended up being much worse than I expected, but they also had a lot of (wasted) opportunities to make things interesting. Cookus was surprisingly mistake-prone.

UM - The secondary needs to play better, though I was surprised to see Valpo finished with a below-average efficiency rating (119). Valpo didn't seem like the undersized, overmatched team I was expecting, though.

MSU - They were outgained 511-143 and turnovers were even, so I'm not sure why the score wasn't uglier.

NoCo - 41-14 against College of Idaho isn't impressive, but it was 28-0 at the end of the first quarter.

UND - Nothing unexpected here. An FCS team isn't gonna beat Utah.

Defense played a lot better than expected against an Idaho team that returned its "stud" QB. Of course Idaho could of just regressed back to being Idalol.

It's ALWAYS BEEN WEAK. Quit acting like this just happened.

It's one of the weakest conferences in the country and Montana still can barely manage to be a .500 team. It's embarrassing

Weaker than the SWAC? Or the NEC? Or the MEAC? Or the Pioneer League?

Really?

Well we should get a pretty good idea on how "bad" the Big Sky is going to be this week with 8 FCS vs FCS matchups. 5 against the Missouri Valley.

I only watched two games;

The Griz look exactly like we did last year. Not promising.

Montana State has a good defense. Well, good for the Big Sky. And the worst passing game I have EVER seen in my life. I can't believe we couldn't figure that shit out last year. Embarrassing.

Isn't it just a shade early for this question? I think EWU is going to get their act together, as will UM. And PSU will prove to be "for real."

To be fair...Murray had about 1 second to throw every play. We will see this weekend if he is better (he has to be...right?)

I dunno, it will be better but I don't think it will ever be anything other than pretty bad (with Murray). When I was watching Florida-Michigan you would see the UF QB Franks try to at least get through some progressions in the face of some extreme Wolverine pressure. When they brought in Zaire he would basically check the first read, and then immediately enter scramble mode. He looked exactly like Murray.

Yeah...I hope you are wrong...They have at least one kid that is Red-shirting this year, that is more of a pure passer (and is like 6'6"). I still look at this year as a "Rebuilding" year, but we have some real good talent around him, that I hate to see wasted trying to make a kid something he may never be.

1-4, with the one win being from the team that is leaving the Big Sky for MVFC..

why do people keep bringing this up? Like you should get to claim their victory because they're moving???

I watched this week's game and...gulp, the Cats passing game and Murray looked better than EWU's. The D looked solid too. They're going to win some games this year and could finish above .500.

Weber, UND, and SUU looked good too. Throw in PSU and there's your current top 5.

Sac State is also looking pretty good as well. Just look past the usual suspects (EWU, Montana, Poly).
