2017 CAA thread
Elon hires Curt Cignetti from D2 Indiana (PA) as their new HC. Looks to be a very good hire by Elon. Cignetti started out as a grad assistant at Pitt, followed by short stops at Davidson, Rice, and Temple. Was an assistant at Pitt (7 seasons) NC State (also 7 seasons), followed by Alabama (4 seasons) as their WR coach & recruiting coordinator signing classes loaded with 4 & 5 star recruits. Was part of Bama's 2009 National Champ staff. 53-17 in 6 seasons at IU-PA, who he elevated a notch or 2:
IU-P 3 seasons prior to Cignetti:
2008 8-2
2009 5-6
2010: 6-5
Under Cignetti:
2011: 7-3
2012: 12-2, lost qtrfinals Div 2 playoffs.
2013: 9-2
2014: 6-5
2015: 9-3 lost 2nd round Div II playoffs to Shepherd 17-13, who made NC game.
2016: 10-2 lost 2nd round Div II playoffs.

Re: CAA 2017 offseason news
I-A Transfers to CAA schools (star would be according to Rivals). Biggest impact transfer on paper is obviously Marcus Marshall for JMU. Looks like JMU, Albany, and UD are the only I see that have added any that have had an impact at the I-A level. Anyone else?
JMU now with 7 P5 transfers. 1st 2 were January enrollees, participated Spring ball:
-Marcus Marshall, Junior leading rusher for Ga Tech the past 2 seasons, (181 carries for 1273 yds, 7.03 ypc, 8 TDs) . Mother & father went to JMU (father is JMU's career rushing leader). Had a big Spring at JMU.
-3 star MD LB Gus Little, redshirt Sophmore
-3 star UVA WR David Eldridge, Junior. 2 seasons 10 catches, 265 yds, 2 TDs. Last season played in 11 of 12 games, 2 starts. Career high vs Duke 2 receptions, 112 yds, 1 TD.
-2 to 3 star UVA ILB Landan Word, Soph. Last season played in 11 of 12 games, 2 starts as a true Fr. 21 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 TFL. Listed at 6'5"/245. Sounds like a DE, not an ILB.
-2 to 3 star Rutgers DE Ron'Dell Carter, redshirt Soph. From Maryland. Listed 6'2'/275. Played in 5 games last season, 2 tackles, .5 sack.
-3 star UMD OL EJ Donahue, redshirt Soph.
-2 to 3 star USC OL Pika Leota, redshirt Fr.
Albany:
-3 star Penn State DL transfer Antoine White (will be a rJr). 2 seasons as a backup at PSU 29 tackles, 3 TFL, 2.5 sacks.
UD
-3 star Penn State OL transfer Noah Beh (will be a rJr) (2 deep 2015, slated to start 2016 before being suspended for the season).
-2 star App State QB transfer JP Caruso. ASU backup the last 2 seasons, was 3-4 string coming out of Spring ball. Grad student, 2 seasons eligibility left.
Maine
-3 star JUCO & former Florida QB transfer Max Staver (will be a rSr).
-3 star Wake Forest TE transfer Brendan O’Neil (will be a rSo).
UR
-3 star Wake Forest WR transfer Jeremiah Brown (will be a rFr).
URI
-3 star Maryland TE transfer Tyler Burke (will be a rJr).

JMU:
2014: 9 (Withers 1st season)
2015: 0
2016: 6 (Houston's 1st season)
2017: 3
9 I-A transfer as of now will be on roster for 2017. The 3 transfers I listed above joining 6 returning (8 listed on the current roster, not listed is the recently announced UVA WR transfer David Eldridge). Of the 9, 6-7 should be starters.
Wouldn't have as many if not for two of the last 4 seasons have had new HC's, which usually leads to a few more transfers. (Don't have a bunch of JUCO, either, only 2). Even so, I wouldn't call 9 on the roster 'Transfer U'

Was just giving you grief as people used to blab on about the Hens taking transfers. None of us hold a candle to JaxSt or Chatty, but it's allowed and it would be stupid not to take them.

True. I don't think anyone in the CAA was ever was bad as UMass back in the 00s'. I like what JMU seems to have averaged yearly (with the exception of the new HC years). Maybe avg around 16-17 signees a year, with89Hen wrote:I really don't know, they have a lot to do to earn me back as a fan with interest.BDKJMU wrote:Isn't UD suppose to be getting a transfer QB?

-About doz straight out of HS
-About 2-3 I-A transfers
-About 2 post grad (like the military PG FUMA, Hargrave, GA Military, Valley Forge) or JUCO.

JMU snags 2nd top assistant. JMU had lost 2 assistants this offseason, both of them the last 2 holdovers from the Everett Withers regime.
-The JMU OL coach from the last 3 seasons, Jamal Powell, left this past winter to take the same position with Lamar. Move was for personal reasons, as both he and his wife are from out there. To replace Powell, JMU in March hired away from UD Fontel Mines, one of Rocco's top assistants from UR, who had been their WR coach. Fines is coaching inside WR/TEs at JMU. Last year's JMU TE coach, Bryan Stinespring, former VT assistant where he coached the OL, TE, and was & OC during his 26 years with the Hokies, is now coaching OL.

Last month John Bowers, JMU's OLB & special teams coach, a JMU grad, left to be near his son who is slated to be the starting QB for Cal. JMU just announced the hiring of a top assistant from the Citadel, their DL coach, who will replace Bowers coaching OLB & special teams.

Re: CAA 2017 offseason news
"Despite travel ban, UAlbany football game in N.C. will go on
.....The University at Albany football team will play its game at Elon (N.C.) as scheduled on Sept. 30 despite Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s ban on non-essential state-funded travel to North Carolina.
The ban was put into place in response to that state’s House Bill 2 and the replacement bill, HB142, which critics say are discriminatory to the LGBT community.
Athletic director Mark Benson said Friday that UAlbany is contractually obligated to play the game as a football-only member of the Colonial Athletic Association. Also, Benson said the game was scheduled before the travel ban was put into effect in March 2016. There’s a clause in the ban that exempts preexisting contracts.
Benson said the Great Danes will adhere to the spirit of the travel ban by flying into Virginia and staying at a hotel there while busing to and from Elon for the game.
Benson said UAlbany reached a resolution after the school’s governmental relations team and legal department negotiated with the governor’s office.
If the game wasn’t played, UAlbany faced a fine and possible forfeit of the game, Benson said.
The game is covered by a clause in the March 2016 executive order from Cuomo instituting the ban that exempts certain types of travel, including that necessary “to meet prior contractual obligations.” Because UAlbany’s contract with the CAA pre-dates the executive order, the team is cleared to play.
That is different than what happened to the UAlbany men’s basketball team last year when they had to scrap plans to play a season-opening game against Duke in North Carolina. The UA field hockey team also wasn’t able to play at Duke.
The Cuomo administration reaffirmed the ban in May despite the passage of the replacement bill in North Carolina."

Re: CAA 2017 offseason news
The NCAA and the ACC said teams traveling to NC were good to go after the initial bill was overturned and a revised was was put in its place. But apparently that's not good enough for NY. Sucks for Albany's team being used as political pawns by Gov Cuomo, to have to fly in/out of an out of state airport (Roanoke or Lynchburg most likely), and having to bus in from an out of state hotel.. Syracuse (@ NC State) isn't forcing their team to take part in this stupidty..(yeah I know Cuse is private).

Re: CAA 2017 offseason news
CAA releases season schedule. Kind of pointless, as all the schools had already released theirs, and game times weren't given because a TV deal hasn't been inked yet.

Re: CAA 2017 offseason news
JMU loses 2, adds 2.BDKJMU wrote:I-A Transfers to CAA schools (star would be according to Rivals). Biggest impact transfer on paper is obviously Marcus Marshall for JMU. Looks like JMU, Albany, and UD are the only I see that have added any that have had an impact at the I-A level. Anyone else?
JMU now with 5 P5 transfers. 1st 2 were January enrollees, participated Spring ball):
-Marcus Marshall, Jr, leading rusher for Ga Tech the past 2 seasons, (181 carries for 1273 yds, 7.03 ypc, 8 TDs) . Mother & father went to JMU (father is JMU's career rushing leader). Had a big Spring at JMU.
-3 star MD LB Gus Little (will be a rSo)
-3 star UVA WR David Eldridge (will be a Jr) 2 seasons 10 catches, 265 yds, 2 TDs. Last season played in 11 of 12 games, 2 starts. Career high vs Duke 2 receptions, 112 yds, 1 TD.
-2-3 star Landan Word, ILB*, UVA. Former 2/3 star recruit. Last season played in 11 of 12 games, 2 starts as a true Fr. 21 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 TFL. Listed at 6'5"/245. Sounds like a DE, not an ILB.
-2-3 star Rutgers DE Ron'Dell Carter. From Maryland. Listed 6'2'/275. Played in 5 games last season, 2 tackles, .5 sack.
-Was announced yesterday that JMU's would be starting RT, who filled in during last season's playoffs for JMU's injured All American RT (now with da Bears), #68 (who had all the false starts vs NDSU), tore his achilles tendon 2+ weeks ago and is out for the season. Also lost a likely 2 deep DL for unknown reasons.
Announced yesterday that JMU was adding a former 3 star OL transfer from UMD, impressive list of offers. This had been rumored for awhile..Impressive list of offers, but didn't play in 2 seasons for UMD, so meh, we'll see.

Announced today that JMU was adding another transfer OL, a former 3 star (247 & ESPN, 2 star Rivals) from USC, who will be starting practice tomorrow. The kid, who was USC's highest rated OL recruit last year, was redshirted last year. After his OL coach left (fired?) for GST, the kid followed him to GST in June. Probably took a look around and decided he didn't want to sit out a year & then play for a terrible Sun Belt program to win 2-3 games a season. He's from Asheville, NC. Coach Houston is from that area and is good friends with the kid's HS coach. The HS coach calls Houston and the kid leaves GST after less than 2 months and comes to JMU.

So that makes 7 P5 transfers for JMU this year..
