Whoever is quarterbacking the Hornets against Portland State will have a coming out party. Viks pass defense is so bad, we'll make them look like the best quarterback in the conference.

Patrick Smith because of his 170 yds and a 24.3 ypc average of TSU was voted Adidas OVC Off Player of the week in the loss to Vanderbilt. He just turned himself into a legit NFL prospect.Smith hauled in a OVC season's best 93 yd bomb from Ronald Butler.

For some stupid reason the clueless Hornet coaching staff started Merker who isn't a D1 caliber QB. K-Ham struggling isn't all K-Hams fault, the Hornet OL is garbage and he has average at best WRs to throw to. No QB was going to succeed this season. The Hornets probably would have stole a win had K-Ham played the whole game.

And no I don't think the Hornet D can stop the Vikes. I'm pretty sure the Hornets won't see another win this season. Hopefully that results in Sears getting shit canned.

1) Mercer is 5-1 (.833) in their 6 most recent 1-score games.
2) Blowing that lead was NOT good, but it did almost seem the Bears were 'goofing around' vs. the Govs - going for it early on 4th & 2 from their own 23 (they made it). Throwing a 'Hail Mary' at the end of the half - up 24-6, instead of kneeling it out (it was picked). Completely mixing/matching on Defense - 2 DLmen started who have not started a game this year - lots of 'new names' on the Defensive Stats Chart. Former Bears' LB's breaking 50 yard runs and going for almost 100 for the day. It was a REAL 'funky' game.
3) "Consensus" Playoff Teams, JaxState and Eastern Illinois, didn't exactly shine vs. "the doormat" Governors either. It was a 1-score game in the 4th quarter for the Panthers and same in the 3rd quarter for the very highly-ranked Gamecocks. As I have been so often told, a "W" is a "W"...by 1-point or 50.

7 fumbles!? What's goin on in Newark? Bad coaching doesn't equate to 7 FUMBLES!

Good points here, but two things…

Mercer has turned around their close-game fortunes, but most of their recent close wins were over weak teams (Austin Peay, VMI, Tennessee Tech, 2015 Furman).

EIU doesn't really look like a playoff team now. They're 5-3, but a pretty weak 5-3.

Yes - those 4 were not the strongest of Teams, but (I know you said "most") you did omit the close win over #3 ranked Chatt. And, the funny thing is, when Mercer was previously on a string of losing close games, which began in 2014 with a 5 point loss to #12 Furman, and included very close losses to Playoff/Playoff contending Samford, Chatt, The Citadel (2x - now 3x (that's the 1 of 5-1)...by a TOTAL of 5 points), and Wofford....I didn't see anyone calling out that those close losses were to strong Teams. All I heard was "an "L" is an "L""....so, as I said, a "W" is a "W"...and those 4 "W's" against the Teams you noted as just as much "W's" as those previous "L's" were "L's."

E. ILL. was on every Playoff Projection bracket I saw, even after APSU pushed them to the 4th quarter. It wasn't until they lost to Murray State this past Saturday, that they lost their (perceived) luster.

Tomorrow: the rest of the playoff conferences.

I'd like to nominate SUU for worst performance this week after dropping a game in which they led 36-14 at halftime. Shot themselves right in the foot and gave up 23 unanswered points in the 4th quarter. Pulled defeat right out of the jaws of victory.
