Who is Withers?
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

The JMU Royal Dukes are now royally clucked (rhymes with). The majority of Withers staff is going with him reportedly. I can hear the JMU fanbase steaming now about being stuck in FCS and losing their coach to the Sun Belt.

You know you being a Delaware fan I'll go ahead and tell you that K.C. Keeler had applied for the Texas State job. Must be kind of an ego hit for him that they hired the guy from JMU.

Yeah, JMU board is exploding right now. Apparently Withers was selling recruits to JMU the on Tues then bolts for TX State on Wed. Rumored that he didn't even meet with the team face to face, but rather sent a text, and is already trying to poach the recruits (one from Richmond reportedly already has decommitted from JMU and committed to TX State. Also reportedly taking half the staff with him. Fuck him.. :ohno:

At least it wasn't a situation where he played football at the school he was coaching then had spent his entire college coaching career there and seemed to be part of the culture so that you had some reason to believe maybe he had some kind of loyalty so that he wouldn't bolt to a really crappy FBS program then did indeed bolt to a really crappy FBS program as was the case with ANOTHER FCS coach this year.

UNI's previous basketball coach, Greg McDermott, did something similar.

He is in the UNI athletics HOF for his time at UNI as a player. He took over as HC in 2001. Led UNI to a couple NCAA appearances. Called UNI a "dream job" in 2006 during a run to the NCAA tournament. Following the loss in the NCAA tournament he didn't fly back to Cedar Falls with the team. He took a private plane to interview for the Iowa State job and accepted it within a week of the loss. Then called Iowa State a dream opportunity....yep, an in-state rival we played every year at that time...and was on the schedule for a home game the coming season. He then was about to get fired at Iowa State 4 years later so he bolted for the Creighton job and took his son with him. The problem there is his son was committed, and signed a LOI, to play for UNI and was a week from starting summer classes at UNI. His son? Doug McDermott...top 5 in NCAA history in scoring Doug McDermott...Creighton? They just happened to be UNI's biggest conference rival during that time.

Talk about burning bridges.

Oh, and UNI's former AD that just left - Troy Dannen - served on the NCAA selection committee for the FCS playoffs. While in Indy this time around he interviewed for, and accepted, the Tulane position. He "stayed on" at UNI through the end of December....BUT...during that time he was in New Orleans nearly the entire month, hired the new Tulane football coach, etc...

Yeah. Fuck guys like that.

Public record/knowledge.

He wanted that job pretty bad. He applied and once he found out he wasn't going to get it he has played the aggressive defensive statements of "I wasn't a candidate for the job and always wanted to be at SHSU" card without being prompted too.

Aparently Tx State approached Majr Applewhite (Houston OC) and he turned them down.
http://www.chron.com/sports/cougars/art ... 734500.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Then the job was offered to the TCU OC, and he turned them down over $$.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/sto ... te-bobcats" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Withers was at best the 3rd choice...

Maybe Keeler would have been next...for the record, I would have definitely taken Keeler over Withers

#TXST and Everett Withers signed a five-year deal worth $3.5 million. 2016- $650K, 2017-$675K, 2018-$700K, 2019-$725K and 2020-$750K.
https://twitter.com/smdrjoe/status/685249981280747520" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Withers was getting 325k from JMU. He was 18-7, but 1-5 vs playoff teams, including 0-2 in the playoffs. That's with top 2-3 in the nation in I-AA salary, facilities, attendance, support. Heck JMU was overpaying. Wow Tx St overpaid.

He said he is going to meet with the team on Sunday. Not sure how easy it is to meet with the team during winter break.

I'm not surprised. He definitely talks a good game, and he can recruit. He could probably sell ice cream to an eskimo. But you think your defense was bad now..

Copied off JMU board.
Prior to JMU Withers had 1 season as Minnesota DC, 4 seasons at UNC (3 as DC and 1 as interim HC), and 2 seasons as OSU co-DC/secondary coach.

-Minneosta’s defense got worse during his year as DC and got better after he left.
-UNC overall was a mixed bag. Other than 2009, which was a great year, mediocre.
-OSU’s pass defense got WAY worse after Withers got there, and WAY better after he left.
-JMU's defense got way worse after he got here

Minnesota defense
2006 26.0 ppg (86th)/426.3 ypg (113th) (season before Withers)
2007 36.7 ppg (109th)/518.6 ypg (119th) DEAD LAST
2008 24.7 ppg (61st)/383.6 ypg (80th) (season after Withers)

UNC defense
2007 24.5 (45th) / 349.8 ypg (37th) (season before Withers)
2008 20.3 ppg (28th) / 357.9 ypg (62nd)
2009 16.9 ppg (13th) / 267.8 ypg (6th)
2010 22.9 ppg (49th) / 338.5 ypg (33rd)
2011 23.5 ppg (48th) / 352.9 ypg (42nd)
2012 25.7 ppg (54th) / 389.6 ypg (59th) (season after Withers)

OSU secondary
2011 182 ypg (14th) (Season before Withers)
2012 243.5 ypg (78th)
2013 268 ypg (112th)
2014 201.1 ypg (29th) (Season after Withers)

JMU defense
2013 24.1 ppg (43rd)/349.8 (30th) (Season before Withers) (and that was the worst JMU defense in over a decade).
2014 29.0 ppg (80th)/424.8 ypg (91st)
2015 28.7 ppg (77th)/403.5 ypg (77th)

Our defense was already last so I assume maybe he can't get it lower. As long as he wins with his offense, I don't care about his defense. But I do hope he hires a decent DC. He can leave whoever was in charge of that back in Virginia.

35 seasons of I-AA football. 4 seasons most points given up:
1. 1992 32.3 ppg
2. 1997 30.6 ppg
3. 2014 29.0 ppg
4. 2015 28.7 ppg

17 seasons (1999-2015) that defensive stats have been kept, most ypg given up:
2014: 424.8 ypg
2015: 403.5 ypg
2003, 363.1 ypg.

JMU this past season of 12 CAA teams, CAA games only was 11th Total Defense, dead last 12th scoring. This despite having more talent on the field than most of the teams in the CAA..

There's nothing wrong with swinging for the fences. Having said that, the admin used a lot of smoke and mirrors. If you watched the presser 1) Yes, Applewhite was approached but never interviewed. 2) We also learned Keeler was never approached, nor was Meachum. 3) Traylor from UT was approached but they scratched him off early. (I mean, it was 15 days from Fran resigning late to the hire). 4) Names were fed to the media but the Parker list wasn't revealed. There were numerous calls and interviews so no one except that committee knows, for certain, how many actually were. 5) How many schools get the very first guy on a "wish list?
