Athletic linebacker begins his final collegiate campaign battling with Jacque Roman for the starting assignment at middle linebacker ... at 215 pounds, Speer is a little better suited for passing downs than the 240-pound Roman ... whoever loses the battle will still see significant minutes.

2006: Battled various ailments throughout the campaign but still managed to get in on 59 tackles, good for ninth on the squad ... started nine of the first 10 games of the season, but missed games versus Gardner-Webb and Western Carolina due to injury and relinquished the starting nod to Roman for the last five games of the year ... forced a fumble in the season opener at NC State ... had eight stops in home triumph over No. 12 James Madison ... notched a season-high nine tackles, including one for loss, at Chattanooga ... was in on eight stops at Georgia Southern, but didn’t manage more than three tackles in a game the rest of the way.

2005: Played in all 15 games, making one start (at Wofford) in the place of injured starter Brad West ... made the most of his first starting opportunity by recording 12 tackles (eight solo) and an interception in romp over the Terriers ... turned out an impressive performance on the biggest stage with five stops (four solo) and a forced fumble versus Northern Iowa in the national championship game ... recorded at least one tackle in 13-of-15 games and multiple stops in nine contests ... finished the season with 40 tackles, good for 13th on the squad.

2004: Recorded 11 tackles as a reserve linebacker and special teams player as a true freshman ... tallied season-high four stops (two solo) in win over No. 5 Wofford ... recovered a fumble versus Elon.

High School: Selected to play in East-West all-star game … twice named a South Piedmont 3A all-Conference pick … a three-time all-county honoree … county defensive player of the year as a senior … named first-team all-Piedmont by The Charlotte Observer … received 2003 South Piedmont 3A Conference Defensive Player of the Year after totaling 143 tackles and three sacks … rushed for over 700 yards and nine touchdowns en route to being a two-time team MVP selection … three-sport athlete, lettering four times on the gridiron, twice on the track and once in wrestling.
