"We are not pursuing additional members at this time," Benson said, saying that the league would forgo playing a conference championship game. "At this juncture, the Sun Belt shouldn't be considered a landing spot whether it's an FCS member or an existing FBS member."
Benson said his announcement will "allow both Idaho and New Mexico State to know the direction the Sun Belt is headed. Personally, I wish the best for the University of Idaho and New Mexico State."
Per the Idaho Statesman, Benson also confirmed that he had spoken with Idaho athletic director Rob Spear prior to the announcement.

I had a conversation with a Ga. Southern alum last night at the SoCon baseball tourney about the move up. Sounds like the GSU folks aren't terribly excited about the options on moving up like many of us ASU folks. I think we were both in the same camp about a new conference with JMU, GSU, ASU, Delaware, and a few others. He said he would really hate to see one or the other leave the SoCon alone because the two schools are similar in demographics and size which I would agree with.

It looks to me like there are at least 6 eastern schools that would love to join FBS right now. The irony is the WAC might be their only option as well and then they would be in charge of an existing conference upon joining. Crazy times, if the WAC ends up essentially an eastern conference. It doesn't do Idaho and New Mexico State much, but it could be their only option.
After the WAC dies is it really not possible to just form a new conference of eastern FCS teams? The Sun Belt started out as NMSU, and a bunch of ex-IAA teams. Why can't it just be done again?

No, the rules have changed. FCS teams must have an invite from an existing FBS conference to move up.
