FBS Playoffs (Poll)
FBS Playoffs (Poll)
Alabama edging out Ohio State was the right call. I'm glad the committee didn't screw that up.
Alabama wins it all.
Alabama wins it all.

All I know is it won't be Oklahoma. Those Big 12 offenses always look unstoppable until they run into an elite southeast defense (see 2008).

Re: FBS Playoffs (Poll)
I picked Alabama but I'm pulling for Georgia. Frankly I am among those that thinks that if they're going to limit the playoff to only four teams when there are 5 true major conferences one criterion should be that a program can't be in the playoff if it didn't win its conference championship.
I wish Wisconsin would've beaten Ohio State just because I'd rather see only conference champions in and I think that'd be the case if Wisconsin would've won.
And I wouldn't be surprised to see Georgia win it. That team is loaded.

The thing about Oklahoma is that they probably have the best QB of the 4. That may be good enough for at least a semi-final win.Gil Dobie wrote:Got Oklahomly in this one.

There's noise being made for 8 teams.
This thing will be 16 teams in just a few years - I called this years ago

Just by one quick look it looks like Alabama and Georgia are favored. For sure I think Georgia should be a solid favorite over Oklahoma. I realize Georgia really laid an egg against Auburn during the regular season game. But, again: That team is loaded.bluehenbillk wrote:Clemson beating Oklahoma in the chip.

Bama should have gotten in over OSU...that's what happens when you get shit on by a crappy Iowa team.

It won't be 16 in a few years. Will be at least a decade. Current contract for 4 runs from 2014-2025 season. IF this 2018 offseason they decide to re do the contract it won't be 8 until likely 2020. That would be after 6 seasons of 4, which started 2014 season. Would be at least another 1/2 doz seasons at 8. Won't see 16 until the late 2020s at the earliest. NCAA moves at a slow pace, and the P5s will fight tooth and nail to not have to share with the G5s. 16 would likely mean every conference getting a bid, including all 5 G5.CID1990 wrote:There's noise being made for 8 teams.

Re: FBS Playoffs (Poll)
With 16 you:
-have teams in that have zero chance of winning the NC.
-can't maintain the bowl system.
-stretch the season into late Jan (assuming 12 game seasons, conference championships the 1st weekend of Dec, and a minimum of 1.5 to-2 weeks between conference championship games, round of 16, quarterfinals, semis, NC).
-Teams playing up to 17 games.
With 8, you have:
-5 P5 AQ and 3 at large.
-Include everyone that has a chance of winning an NC.
-Can maintain he bowl system.
-Can still have the semis and NC games scheduled as they are now.
-1st weeked Dec conference champ games (this year Sat, Dec 2).
-3rd weekend Dec Quarterfinals (This year could be around Fri, 12/15-Sat, 12/16).
-12/31- 1/1 NC semis (same as now current setup).
-1/8 to 1/12 NC game (same as current set up).
Could still have the same set up with the 6 major bowls currently involved in the playoffs now as far as the semifinals (with 2 hosting semis each year, all 6 hosting once every 3 years). With an expansion to 8 could simply have the 4 bowls not hosting the semis each year hosting the 4 quarterfinal games.
The 6 major bowl games would only involve 8 teams instead of 12, which means for the 39 current bowl games, there would be 74 teams going to bowls instead of 78. Which would likely solve the problem of 5-7 teams going to bowls..

Re: FBS Playoffs (Poll)
I think they should also have a provision that if you’re undefeated and meet a predetermined SoS by the end of the season you should be guaranteed an at large in an expanded field. The one problem is that some of your early opponents could hypothetically throw games late in the year to hurt your SoS/help their conference, but that’s getting pretty deep into Expandos territory.BDKJMU wrote:With 16 you:

Re: FBS Playoffs (Poll)
I'm not in the camp that believes conference champs should get a free pass. Schedules are unbalanced and sometimes divisions are unbalanced. They get their conference trophy, that should be enough. Let the overall body of work determine the playoff contenders.

Re: FBS Playoffs (Poll)
I'm sick of defining conferences out, a la JMU's proposal. It's STUPID, IMO, to preclude the possibility of an upset. I LOVED seeing Boise beat Oklahoma, and JMU's proposal would have prevented that....
