SlumBelch went 1-3 last night, with only win a future Big Sky match up Idaho beating the SuperHornets

Skimmed back over the thread and noticed this.

Shawn Elliot really has his work cut out for him. Georgia State really is horrendous at the skill positions other than Hart and Werts

Did this thread's title get changed from 2016 to 2017? And if so, why? SKelly's going to get excited if he thinks a Sunbelt 2017 thread has 11 pages. He'll have to wash his pants to get the sticky out.

We need a new Sunbelt 2017 thread that accurately shows the number of posts (and interest) to keep SKelly's laundry costs down. :D

Thanks Dback - we can always count on you to keep us up to date on what's happening in the worst FBS G5 league that you definitely never ever pay any attention. :kisswink:

CCU won it's first FBS game, albeit against a weak UMass. We're off this week and we continue on 9/16 at UAB. As of today, ESPN has Coastal's odds of winning at 57-43.

On Saturday, UAB defeated Alabama A&T, 38-7. UAB sat out for the 2015 and 2016 seasons after being shut down for a brief time in 2014.

App looked pretty good vs. UGA in the first quarter and even though we were down 21-0 at the half the offensive stats were nearly identical. Penalties hit us pretty hard, and the worst thing we could have done was take out their starting QB in the first quarter. The freshman that replaced him ran a hurry up offense and thrashed us pretty handily. Once they got our secondary watching for the pass their running game started cranking up. We were very formulaic in running up the middle on 1st and 2nd downs where they were the strongest defensively and occasionally going to short passes to the outside. That's going to have to improve if we're going to be competitive this season.

At least the weather was good. :ohno: Athens is a pretty cool town, but I didn't find their fanbase to be overly friendly.

UGAy fans are HORRIBLE.

We're starting a Freshman QB in a new offensive system. I was expecting it to be very bad. It was even worse than I imagined. Less than 100 yards of offense. :ohno:
The defense played very well considering. Sacked Auburn's QB at least three times and even had a scoop and score. The offense kept going 3 and out which wore the defense out in the end. Auburn's D will win them many games this season. That was the fastest and best defense GS has ever played.

I don't think so. It can be argued that the 2011 'Bammer defense was better, but that was the 2nd worst performance in our programs modern history.

Well, in their defense - it wasn't at home. It was moved to Birmingham. And there were ~3k fans there.

No excuse for Jawjuh Suthun, though.... :ohno:

Well that proves it then. You could fill your stadium to capacity when in FCS, but can't after moving to FBS. Terrible choice for you. Etc, etc, etc.

Enjoy the ride!

Bottom line is that the Sun Belt is a set of FCS caliber programs trying to pretend to be FBS.

Compared to who? :suspicious:
The Mac?
CUSA?
The Mountain West (not most of teams in that conference)

You can count on one hand the number of G5 programs that are really comparable to the lower rungs of the Power5, as I believe you'd said before. No one is really denying there's a gulf between the P5 and G5, but it's not like there's clear strata in the FCS as well. At least G5 leagues don't put ceilings for scholarships under the maximum allowed by the subdivision, like some FCS leagues do. Are you going to pull a MplsBison and tell those schools they should be in DII or some other lower division?

I would say the fact that they are in the FBS disproves your opinion.

You know what I'm talking about. It's called trying to be something you're not.

Yes, you can be classified as FBS in an effort to be in the "top level of college football."

But teams in the Sun Belt are not in the top level of college football. Real caliber wise the league is much more like a strong FCS league than it is like a mainstream FBS league. It's a set of programs that really should be in FCS.

There's not a program in the conference that really belongs in FBS.
