Not "again" but for the first time. McNeese State's athletic budget requires less subsidy than Georgia Southern's does. In 2015 49.6 percent of McNeese's athletic program support was subsidy as compared to 65.28% of Georgia Southern's. But a lot of the Georgia Southern subsidy is student fees. In 2015 Georgia Southern students paid $9.6 million in student fees to support the athletic program while McNeese students paid $0.6 million.
1. Part of the athletic fees have a sunset. They are to pay for the seating expansion and new facility.

2. Georgia Southern has more than twice as many students as McNeese, 20k and probably soon to be 25k if the rumors we're going to merge with AASU is true.

3. The Georgia BoR has instituted new rules about percent subsidy requiring us to get to 50%, which we will and if we acquire AASU's students fees will go down as will the per-student subsidy.

4. When we reach that 50% subsidy I feel sure it will be the lowest percentage in our program's history. I believe we were at 70% just four years ago, but Baldy probably knows better than I on this one.
I'm not sure when the athletic fees sunset, but I think you are correct. If I remember correctly, our athletic fees were one of the lowest in the state for a DI program until the expansion. However, we won't let that stop JSO from cherry picking data and changing the subject to support his invalid argument.

BTW this is the post to which I was responding when I talked about finances. I think it's reasonable to interpret it as suggesting a financial advantage associated with moving to FBS.

I am neither cherry picking nor changing the subject.

BTW there are also the question of whether or not the additional exposure is actually worth the increased financial loss.

I'm not getting why you guys think the student fees sunsetting contributes to your side of the argument. In 2015 the Georgia Southern athletic program actually generated about $7.3 million in actual revenue (ticket sales, contributions, rights/ licensing, and "other") while incurring $20.2 million in expenses. Raping students to the tune of $9.6 million in fees helped fill the gap. How is it going to be "good" when that component of "revenue" is no longer available?

You've got an athletic program that costs over $20 million and you've got about $7 million being generated by actual interest in the program. How is that a good thing?

And, no, that's not cherry picking or changing the subject.

Football has different purposes for different schools.
Some consider it a tool for student recruitment. Which is advertisement. Which can have immeasurable benefits.

An FBS team is getting paid over three times what a FCS team is getting paid for playing the same game. That is the very definition of a financial advantage. When you're pinching pennies, there is much more flexibility when you have 2X or 3X the revenue.

You can't rape the willing. The students voted with an overwhelming majority to accept the athletic fee increase. It will be "good" when the athletic fees sunset because it will mean that the stadium expansion will be paid off. That is the only reason there was an increase in the first place. The carrying costs for the expansion was the main cause for our budget to balloon.

Your tirade was about "school funds". Once I showed you that almost 50% of McNeese's "revenues" consisted of school funds, you changed the subject to student athletic fees. Those two are entirely different animals.

When all is said and done, the likelihood is that McNeese's athletic program will cost the school less than Georgia Southern's athletic program will as long as McNeese stays in FCS and Georgia Southern stays in FBS.

Student fees and school funds are different animals, but Georgia Southern is avoiding using "school funds" through using student fees. We'll see what happens if and when the student fees go away.

After barely beating MSU and getting absolutely trucked by UW and WSU to start the season, Idaho basically ran Colorado State out of the stadium last night before a bunch of garbage time scores. A nice big "suck it" to the Mountain West.

Not much separation between the G5's and the top half of FCS power conferences.

Which makes Matt Linehan's comments about "we should be FBS!" particularly ironic. We all know Idaho wouldn't win the FCS title.

Because the Missouri Valley is ranked ahead of a G5 conference?

By that logic... there isn't much separation between G5 and P5 since the AAC West is ranked ahead of the SEC-East. :?

I didn't really quarell with your previous statement:
Not much separation between the G5's and the top half of FCS power conferences.
I don't think there's much separation between the top few teams in the best FCS conferences. The difference comes at the bottom of the FCS power conferences.

There's about a 10 pt difference between the average G5 conference and average FCS power conference (depending on how you define it, I guess. I used MVFC, SoCon, Big Sky, and Colonial).

I have no doubt that the NDSU, JMU, Jax State, EWUs could compete just fine with G5 teams (scholarships being equal). The bottom of the conferences? Not so much.

And, Houston or WMU may have won the SEC East this year. Doesn't mean the conference as a whole is on equal level. :coffee:

Any chance we can trade Georgia State for WKU, Southern Miss, or Louisiana Tech in CUSA?

State needs to go join the media market trash heap in CUSA.
