Unfortunately, if States were REALLY to become fiscally responsible, a LOT of football programs at State universities would be shut down. Probably a substantial majority of them.

To be fair, next year a game between UAB and URI would be pretty competitive.

Well, 93, you did care enough to reply. :coffee:

Personally, I find this whole thing a fascinating study in how not to run an athletic department. This screwed-up administration managed to give themselves a one-year death penalty, tick off their fan base, chase away their best players and shackle their recruiters and schedule-makers for years to come.

There's a whole lot of delusion going on out there. Like you see this article:

http://www.sbnation.com/college-footbal ... all-return" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There's some stuff in there about how it really wasn't about finances. But here's the thing:

You can go to the finances database at http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/finances" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and see that UAB's entire athletic department had $1,165,323 in ticket sales, $3,205,602 in contributions, and $3,899,935 in rights/licensing in 2014. That pretty much does it for what the athletic programs actually generated and adds up to $8.3 million. The athletic department expenses were $30,805,171.

It's clear that athletics at UAB were a HUGE money loser with the football program in place during 2014.

Good story here.

And, they make it a pain to copy-and-paste, so I won't bother

But the athletic program is probably still costing the school somewhere around 10 million dollars. In 2017 the school had to kick in about $11 million to balance the books. We'll have to wait until the 2018 figures come out but it's almost certainly going to be similar.

They're getting a better ROI than McNeese.
