Conks: We're willing to compromise on $$$ for the barrier, as low as 2 billion. Donks move goalposts with last minute latest demand out of left field to limit ICE bed space for detaining illegal aliens so even more can be cut loose into the interior.

I don't know if it was really last minute or out of left field but either way. I suspect they've been talking about this with Republicans for some time. But I think it'll be a mistake politically if they let that derail the negotiations.BDKJMU wrote:Conks: We're willing to compromise on $$$ for the barrier, as low as 2 billion. I think basically it comes down to arguing about whether one wants just the dangerous illegals detained or if one also wants a bunch of people who violated the law by virtue of being in the country illegally but are otherwise law-abiding detained. The Democrats don't want people who are here illegally but are otherwise law-abiding detained and that's what they're getting at. But they should make the case for that position and see how it plays before they start a big confrontation over it.
There's what I think is a fair article on the situation at https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigr ... ap-n970071.

Re: How Long Will The Next Shutdown Last? (Feb 2019)
Ok. As I suspected it was not a last minute thing. I can't get to the Washington Post article on it because they want me to pay to read it. But I found a National Review editorial referring to the Washington Post article I saw pop up when I Googled the issue. It's at https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/d ... he-policy/.BDKJMU wrote:Conks: We're willing to compromise on $$$ for the barrier, as low as 2 billion. Here is some text quoting the Washington Post article and otherwise describing the situation:
The author has a point of view. I'm sure the Democrats would argue that what they're proposing would not force the release of dangerous criminals. But the main point is that this was not something the Democrats sprung on the Republicans at the last minute. As you can see, cutting the number of detention beds was part of their initial proposalWall funding hasn’t even been a major issue in the ongoing talks because, as the Post put it, the “White House had begun to signal flexibility on that issue.” Instead,“throughout the talks, Democrats had also been focused on limiting ICE’s ability to detain unauthorized immigrants.”
This is clear from the summary of the Democratic proposal at the beginning of negotiations: Cut the number of detention beds, abolish family detention, and cap detention “associated with interior enforcement” to the level at the tail end of the Obama administration — a level so low that ICE would be forced to release criminals and perhaps even violate the law regarding the kinds of deportable aliens whose detention is mandatory.
That doesn't mean I think it's a good idea for them to push that at this time. I'm just saying that it's not something they slipped in at the end as I've been hearing some on the Republican side say they did.

Trump henchman Hannity has poured gasoline on the fire again, criticizing the preliminary Congressional spending deal. Coulter will probably join in. Trump needs more attention, so he’ll probably shut the guvmint down again. The national emergency shtick will get the Tangerine Twit a boatload of lawsuits and likely articles of impeachment. Lawdamighty, what’s a POTUS to do?

Ask Steve Cohen. I didn’t say an emergency declaration was an impeachable offense — only that your hero would face one.

Re: How Long Will The Next Shutdown Last? (Feb 2019)
It's hard to say because Trump is not a sane individual. But I still would bet no shutdown if I had to bet. The last shutdown was not good to him and his approval - disapproval deficit has diminished some since it ended. And I noticed that he's already trying to scam his base into thinking he's got more going on with the wall than he's really got going on. Looks to me like he's setting up to claim victory after getting his ass kicked.

If only the left leaning media outlets would stop laughing at what a beating Trump is taking. Just shut up and let him think he's saving face. Really. There are times when it is better not to gloat.

So if Trump signs this new bill he'll actually be getting less than what was offered in December. What a n awful deal maker.

Wrong. Trump was offered ZERO for a wall/fence/barrier in Dec. You don't remember Pelosi's "Zero $$ for a wall" statements back in December?Ibanez wrote:So if Trump signs this new bill he'll actually be getting less than what was offered in December. What a n awful deal maker.

I wavered yesterday, but I’ll go back to my poll answer of no shutdown. Drumpf will take the deal and spin it faster than a broken washing machine.Ivytalk wrote:Trump henchman Hannity has poured gasoline on the fire again, criticizing the preliminary Congressional spending deal. Re: How Long Will The Next Shutdown Last? (Feb 2019)
You do know that Pelosi was in the minority in December and it was a Republican Congress that had 2 years to get this done and they couldn't. Gee - I wonder why. I'm sure you'll blame Democrats. You have never cease to amaze anyone with your lack of objectivity.BDKJMU wrote:Wrong. Trump was offered ZERO for a wall/fence/barrier in Dec. https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/13/politics ... index.htmlThe agreement, which includes $1.375 billion for a border barrier, falls well short of the $5.7 billion Trump originally demanded for a wall. It even falls short of the $1.6 billion included in a Senate package last year.
Now explain how a bill, with less money, is a win? He's in a no win situation. He HAS to sign this otherwise it's his fault, again, for a shut down.
