He didn't win at all. The bottom line is that US consumers have benefitted greatly from what's going on with China. If that apple cart is upset US consumers are not going to be happy.

And this thing about a trade deficit being "bad" has got to stop. As may others have said, if I buy something from somebody I give them money and they give me what I want to buy. It's not "bad" when I go to Wal Mart and buy a cheap watch. I want a cheap watch. So I give Wal Mart $10 and Wal Mart gives me a cheap watch.

I have a trade deficit with Wal Mart. But we are both happy.

That's going to be one thing I will certainly pay attention to this cycle - how the Democrats are going to say we should not have touched NAFTA and other trade agreements that are 10+ years old. The status quo should be disrupted from time to time. Agreements should be reviewed and revised from time to time. How can you logically campaign against it. Campaign against his style. But I'm with Trump on the trade deals.

Yep.

Seems like attacking is style would be a no-brainer. Because he's had some very logical "successes" that are hard to campaign against...but they're not smart enough to do that. Instead they just keep moving further and further left....

Abolish ICE--who cares about crime?
Open borders--nothing to see here!
Free everything for everybody
Tax the "rich"--they'll pay for it!
Kill any baby under a week old? Fine...
Socialism! Socialism! Socialism!

Remember Jack Abrahamoff and Tom Delay? When "free trade" was all the shit to the right because it brought cheap goods to the US and represented CAPITALISM? When progressives were the ones in favor of "fair trade", protectionism, and bemoaning the loss of some 50,000 US manufacturing operations to countries with lax environmental and labor laws?

Good times!

I'm guessing JSO is probably consistent with how he felt about it back then and practically everyone on the left is now against tariffs because...Trump and now practically everyone on the right is all 'Yay!...go protectionism'...because Trump.

Obviously will never happen because he doesn't have enough political capital in that dumpster fire of a party, and isn't nearly radical enough for all the left-wingers. But they'd be smart to go all in on middle America.

Plus, if this fucker can keep winning a red state despite Trump personally trying to sink him, what does that tell you?

Most economists do not see the trade gap as money “lost” to other countries, nor do they worry about trade deficits to a large degree.
Look, when you buy something from someone else you get something and they get something. I don't think you need to be a professional economist to see that nobody loses unless someone gets cheated with respect to how much something is actually worth.

When people in the US buy Chinese goods, they are getting those goods for cheap. Do you really doubt that?

Why would you EXPECT to see a situation in which people in China were buying as much or more stuff produced in the United States as/than people in the United States are buying stuff produced in China?

John, here is something that Trip posted on another thread and my reply (and just so you understand Sally is China and Johnny is the US).
UNI88 wrote:
∞∞∞ wrote:Also trade isn't a zero-sum game; it's just that China made more money than we did. Trump and the GOP have sold the trade deficit as America losing money. However a dramatic jump like this does mean our industries are losing potential profits because of the tariffs.

And if I'm confusing anyone, think of it like this: Sally made $10 and Johnny made $8. Johnny's deficit is $2 but they both made money. Is it worth being angry about if you're Johnny? So angry that you're willing to lose $2 in profits to make a point to Sally (who's a communist bitch).
I think it's a little more complicated than that. It's more like Johnny and Sally both make something that the other's family wants. Johnny lets Sally sell directly to him and all of his family members. Sally tells Johnny that the only way he can sell in her house is if he makes the product in partnership with her in her house. She watches everything he does and then uses his intellectual property to start selling the same product directly to her family members and other families in the neighborhood.

I'm a small l libertarian and I believe in free trade but it should be a two-way street and we don't have that with China. I find this whole tit-for-tat on trade very interesting because I believe that the US has been subsidizing world trade (both by allowing access to US markets at more favorable terms than we have access to other markets and by protecting shipping lanes) since at least the end of WWII. It made sense at the time because it helped with recovery and countries that are economically intertwined are less likely to resort to hostilities. It's become the status quo and any attempt to level the playing field is perceived as an attack on free trade.

If you're playing the long game (which the Chinese most definitely are), the benefits of leveling the playing field are huge and could be worth considerable pain in the present.

Well said!

Just like with capitalism, I'm all for free trade too if it's a level playing field and benefits both families.
