Do something about it instead of being complicit in how the GOP is acting. The fact that Trump - a man everyone made fun of since forever - won the GOP primary instead of SIXTEEN other conservative candidates proves how off-the-rail the party has become.AZGrizFan wrote:Very few people (myself included) consider ourselves members of the modern GOP. And the worst part? Republicans didn't even have some twisted primary system like the Democrats. Voters simply supported Trump instead of the SIXTEEN alternatives.

I didn’t vote for Trump. I can’t help what other people do...that’s one of them pesky FREEDOMS that you value so much. I respect the Constitution for what it is: a revolutionary 18th century document on how to run government. However, it's severely outdated and flawed in how it approaches American values.Ivytalk wrote:You’ve obviously never studied the Constitution. Other civilized nations regularly reform their Constitutions; yet we stick with ours because a handful of elite men in 1788 decided that it takes an inordinate amount of states - most of which have too much power for their population size - to make any meaningful change. Frankly it's a ridiculous system.

Elections have consequences, and some of them take decades to show up. A boomer myself, I feel compelled to note that my generation are the people who- in their heyday- sent Ronald Reagan to Washington, 48-2 states in 1980, and 49-1 in 1984.
Not all of us- but most of us- bought into the idea that "business" can always do a more efficient job than government. We learned to disdain unions and civil servants, and recoil from anything that smacked of a 'government handout.'
We traded collective bargaining, workers' rights and financial regulation for free markets, right to work, the Laffer Curve, and trickle-down. We pocketed tax cuts and voted for the politicians who promised more: even as the infrastructure decayed, the costs of education and healthcare soared, and everything that could be 'privatized,' was.
Not everyone voted for this 'every man/woman for themselves' world, but we all get to grow old in it.

Wat? Which liberals are you watching? Certainly not the party as a whole. It might be 1 or 2 (like Paul and Harris teaming up on prison reform) but that's the exception, not the rule. LIberals sho did play nice when they pushed through the ACA or scoffed at the idea that the Russians are a threat in 2012 (remember that foreign policy crack Obama made to Mittens?).∞∞∞ wrote:Liberals always play nice and compromise with Republicans, and when the GOP gains power, they end up absolutely dismantling progressive policies. I have to agree that our laws should change and be updated as our country grows and as we progress through different ages (reconstruction, industrial, post war, digital) but the Constitution is a set of guiding ideal, principles and laws which close to 1.5 Million lives have been lost in theater or battle (not to mention the 1.4 wounded or the ~40k still missing) all trying to defend. OR the millions upon millions that served/serve. They are doing so b/c of American Values. And some of them are immigrants.
But you seem to be ignoring or forgetting that we do just that. Our laws don't stop at #10. In fact, some of those laws have been expanded upon or reversed. Could we do a better job? Sure. But scrapping our history and something that is the hallmark of American Values does not seem to be the best move.

I don't think the Constitution is perfect but it is an excellent framework created by visionary leaders who were willing to work together and compromise for the good of the nation. Do we have enough leaders like that now? I would be extremely concerned about any significant reforms that were pushed through by either party. I would prefer to stick with what we have and use the existing methods to revise it rather than risk completely fvcking it up by veering off course and letting a bunch of partisan, power-hungry whores from either or both parties attempt to replace it. The law of unintended consequences is something that should seriously be considered before making significant changes to the Constitution.

Most of the time it's true but not always. And I'm speaking from very close personal experience. I'm like most thoughtful moderates in that I think government is a necessary evil but should be limited to things like infrastructure, legal system, emergency services, public owned lands, military, and healthcare.

Speaking of blowhards....“F—k hope,” because it’s “the lazy way out,” liberal activist filmmaker Michael Moore says in an interview promoting his new anti-Trump film, “Fahrenheit 11/9,” which opens in theaters on September 21.
Legal means and exposing scandals can’t “save the country,” Moore told The Huffington Post in his vulgar attack on “hope”:
“F--k hope. Seriously, f--k hope. F--k despair, too. But f--k hope.
“Hope is passive. Hope gives you permission to let someone else do the work. Hope leads people to believe that tax returns, or a pee tape, or the FBI or an adult film star will save the country. Hope, and the passivity that comes with it, is what helped get us here to begin with. It’s the lazy way out.
“We don’t need hope. We need action.”
“There is a real insurgency taking place” – and it’s coming from an extremely surprising source, Moore said:
"The revolution is happening in the most unlikely of places. The resistance ― the true resistance ― is not coming from the Democratic Party or from the liberal establishment. I can’t reveal too much right now, but there is a real insurgency taking place."

Jefferson famously wanted the Constitution to expire every 20 years because he didn't want dead people to govern the living. George Washington wrote letters that the Constitution was imperfect.
The founding fathers were radical philosophers; they didn't shape the Constitution so it can be followed for hundreds of years like some sort of religious text. They'd have laughed at Constitutionalists today.
These guys believed that the People should govern themselves however they want. That's how far ahead of their time they were; that even today, we're not as ballsy as them to revamp the Constitution.
I mean FFS, they even went through a different constitution before the current one. I'm glad they didn't think like today's society: "Well we ratified the Articles of Confederation, but we must stick to it forever and make it extremely difficult to make changes for all future people." F that, they just threw it out.

All that stuff is great ^ but it leaves out a few key distinctly critical points
The assumption you two are making is dangerous
You are assuming we're presently being governed by those with equal intellect and temperament
as the founding fathers and framers of said documents
Jefferson had no clue we'd be electing people that think islands are floating
The assumption that Jefferson (a slave holder) makes is that the ruling elite (people like him)
Wealthy land holding students of philosophy and history would be in charge
and that is NOT the case
We are governed by Television Personalities and Troglodytes
