I'm still wrapped around this one. What sub-section of the population are you going to get to run for these offices if they're not going to get paid, or, even as you said in a later post, get paid a salary (you said $70k) but without pension or retirement benefits? I know millenials may not have jobs but for the rest of us who do have paying jobs, how are you going to attract quality candidates if you're asking them to take substantial pay cuts and to cut off retirement benefits while they serve the country? I'm all for not making these political offices lifetime employments, but you can address that with term limits as opposed to making them volunteer-type jobs.

I’ll humor you for a moment...

How many staffers? Say 3-4 in their office where ever you situate this gaggle, and two to four in their district office...

You say the Congress critter gets $70k a year...like it has been pointed out, you may not get many good candidates...but we’ll go with your #...

So staffers can’t make more than the boss, so let’s say each staffer gets $50K a year...no benefits....

Assuming each congress critter gets an office in their district to do constituent services, that’s and average $3k a month (less in East Overshoe, but higher in San Francisco)

Congress Critter - $70,000
Staffers (8 x $50k)- $400,000
District office (12 x $3k) - $36,000

Sub total for 1 critter. $506,000

10000 Critters. - $5,060,000,000

Now add all the IT costs to set up, administer, and maintain this gargantuan organization...

PRICELESS !

With zero guarantee that we have anything better than we currently have...

Take it out of the $700,000,000,000 defense budget.

5 billion dollars for better democratic representation throughout the entire United States is a bargain instead of how we spend that money now.

You got that **** right, Homeskillet.

If you have no doubt of your premises or your power, and want a certain result with all your heart, you naturally express your wishes in law, and sweep away all opposition. To allow opposition by speech seems to indicate that you think the speech impotent, as when a man says that he has squared the circle, or that you do not care wholeheartedly for the result, or that you doubt either your power or your premises."

How do you know it would be better? Maybe we'd just have 30,000 deadbeats instead of 535?

Iirc, the maximum number is 14 or 18...depending on the HoR or Senate. But that doesn’t account for those that work for Congress, not a particular official.

Reverse Citizens United.

Build a small arena with dorm style apts near it and give them a food and travel allowance (it doesn't need to be in DC...there's no reason every gov't institution should be in DC anyways). Build a regular office building for their daily work and staff. Nothing luxurious, except maybe public areas.

Communication in the arena can be done through combinations of live chats, private messages, message boards, emails, etc. God forbid Congressmen have to read and type, and they can still make calls as needed to each other or speak on the floor. Has anyone watched a session of Congress? Half of the time wasted in is procedural garbage that's completely outdated in today's world anyways.

Live votes can be done through a similar system. Make everything publicly available in real-time.

No pilot needs to be over ten tears old or be paid!

Huge savings in the cost of training pilots - they're already trained and ready to go!

Vastly improved safety - 80% of aviation accidents are pilot-error

Enormous reductions in the size/cost of overseas bases - all we'd need is a parking lot on an uninhabited piece of land. At last a use for Bouvet Island!

There's a lot of ignorance in these two posts...

But I agree on the overseas bases. I would begin with 100% drawdown in Korea and in Europe. That would knock out a good 75% of our overseas operating costs.

And yeah - why do we need carriers now that China is building them? The Chinese can have their turn at channel Alfred Thayer Mahan and maintain the sea lanes of communication

I'm sure they'll do a bang up job

I actually agree with the idea of increasing representation- but that number is closer to 570 than 10,000

Wealth redistribution can go both ways, Ayn Hornet, and guess which way it’s been going for the last 30 years?
