Woo hoo!! Cutting 10,000+ jobs!
Raising wages to STILL Below poverty level!
Still taking billions in tax payer subsidies.

Funny - every company that has announced these bonuses has laid off thousands shortly there after.

The bonuses will be based on length of service, according to the company. Workers who've been there for at least 20 years will get the full $1,000. The bonuses will also apply to workers at the Sam's Club locations that did not close.
Wow, work for 20 years, get one $1,000 bonus while the owners are multi-billionaires

20 years at Wal-Mart. That's a depressing thought.

Yup - like Walmart, they had raised wages by a dollar in 2015 (thanks obama), and most workers made above that anyways, so the effect is small, but good publicity for the feeble-minded to lap up.kalm wrote:dbackjon wrote:Funny - every company that has announced these bonuses has laid off thousands shortly there after.

You've pretty much summed up what all the crowing about raising the minimum wage amounts to. Economically little to no impact, but politicians love to tout it because it looks like they care.dbackjon wrote: so the effect is small, but good publicity for the feeble-minded to lap up.

So Wal-Mart is doing something similar to what Seattle businesses are doing (cutting jobs and hours), except Wal-Mart isn't being coerced.

The number one economy in the United States
I'm curious how it's being presented outside the State of Washington
Because I'll tell you what the actual problems are and it's not "employment"
as the Governor already stated Seattle metro area has ZERO unemployment
The only people without jobs don't want jobs (period) EVERYBODY is hiring

Shhh - don't burst their bubble. They want to hang on to the two already struggling restaurants that had to close that the crappy business owners blamed on minimum wage hike...

^^^^Just like here in AZ, minimum wage just went up 50 cents to 10.50 an hour. A long-time Car Wash just closed, made a big-to do about it closing do to minimum wage hike. Leaving out of course that the downtown growth has made the land his car wash sits on worth millions.

Many of those Sams Clubs will be turned into new E-Commerce centers for Wal-Mart, and the displaced workers will be able to apply for those new jobs.
Raising their wages to what Amazon pays their employees in similar positions.
"...taking billions in taxpayer subsidies". Maybe you need to read and learn what a subsidy is, first.

Hey Chizz:
Have you heard about the UW study that showed that overall earnings actually dropped after the MW increase?
BTW, this is a study that was brought to my attention by none other than the unapologetically liberal Slate.
Do you really think there's going to be a simplistic, monotonic relationship between the MW and how well the lowest-skilled and lowest-educated workers live? If that's the case, why not incrementally raise the MW to $40 an hour? Or $50?
I'd honestly like to believe you can raise the standard of living of the lowest earners by simple fiat, but I have my doubts.

Minimum wage is a tricky issue because it makes people feel better
But doesn't really accomplish anything
But I'm not really talking about minimum wage
and by the way:
Why do you think Wal-Mart is raising their hourly starting wage..?
Because people that work for 8 dollars an hour don't care if you fire them
they don't care to show up on time and they just don't care...
The bottom dwelling American can't be bought for that price anymore
and you can't run a business where nobody cares
https://www.forbes.com/sites/panosmourd ... 3684958ade
Walmarts biggest problem is an employee base that actively hates the company
According to Forbes Magazine
How many different ways can Walmart tell you they don't care about you
and expect you to care about them...?

I don't disagree at all. It's like a MLB team spending an insane amount of money on a super star and neglecting the middle the of the lineup.Chizzang wrote: Understood,

There are two ways to run a mega store
1) Wal-Mart style
2) Costco style
Both work perfectly fine
but at their core are completely different approaches
