And the seasons they go round and round

Some of these guys, I think, really are taking these jobs out of a sense of duty to country - that is really all it can be

already have retirement secure

think Trump is an idiot and needs someone to keep tabs on him and limit facetime with the really nutty people

zero political aspirations

But even the most stubbornly stoic can only be silent for so long

I bet a lot of them are True Believers even though they'd never admit it now. They'll all play the for-the-good-of-the-country card but I don't doubt that most of them hate the same people Trump hates.

That is actually an interesting observation...
I've found that long term "Military" guys tend to be a lot less judgemental than one might imagine them to be
Their vast life experience globally tends to beat it out of them

Where as the coddled tend to be less forgiving of others ways and others ideas

true compared to many civilians, but there were always subtle hints from the officers that not voting Republican wasn't looked upon favorably

Looks like Kelly is sticking around till 2020.
White House Chief of Staff John Kelly plans to stay in his post through the presidential election until 2020, a White House official told Reuters, putting to rest months of speculation that the retired military general would be the next to leave U.S. President Donald Trump’s inner circle.

If I had to bet, I'd say Kelly gets shown the door after the midterms, sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
