8 - 0 SCOTUS Ruling - There Is No Hate Speech Exemption

Post by Col Hogan »

Justices rule UNANIMOUSLY that the First Amendment is sacrosanct
The idea that the government may restrict] speech expressing ideas that offend … strikes at the heart of the First Amendment. Speech that demeans on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, disability, or any other similar ground is hateful; but the proudest boast of our free speech jurisprudence is that we protect the freedom to express “the thought that we hate.”

Too bad Donks don't agree. They believe they should be able to shut down ANY speech they don't agree with.

Remember the days when cases before SCOTUS were complex?

This is an instance of SCOTUS granting certiorari because this grand abortion of an idea needed the smackdown

But one day.... we'll have justices who disagree - who will shrink the circle around what kinds of speech are protected

Read the comments on some of the news stories. It's depressing to see how many people disagree with this decision. :ohno:

Oh FFS...this shit was going on on campuses LOOOONG before BLM ever even existed as an entity. They are now just a convenient scapegoat....and for a guy who claims I'm the one who paints with a broad brush, you turn around and say EVERYONE agrees with it except BLM? I could name 10 other groups that have proven they in fact, do NOT agree.

When did BLM pop up? Ferguson? You telling me this shit just started then? BS. It's been going on for a long time before that. Sure it's covered more now AND it's happened get more now. But BLM is the convenient scapegoat for blaming the violence on....the silencing of dissenting thought has been happening for much longer than they've been around.

AZ'a got you on this one Chizzy. This isn't something that just popped up on campuses. It's been brewing for a long time. I've been having debates with my very liberal sister about how college campuses and faculty have been becoming more liberal and less tolerant of conservative thought for 20 years. Colleges should not be indoctrinating students but teaching them about different philosophies and letting the students determine where they stand on the spectrum.

Exactly. I had a philosophy professor, an atheist, single out the deeply religious students. The whole reason for doing so, was to have multiple, passionate point of views and at the end, he never belittled. He never poked fun. In fact, he was always respectful and never condescending. I knew a few of those kids and they actually appreciated his point of view. It was never, " I'm right, you're wrong." It was always from the perspective of logically thinking.

I don't think it was a coincidence that he was one of the more popular professors on campus.

My dad was a prof, and neither he nor any of his colleagues at Eastern were of the pointed bearded, ivory tower, shout dissent down variety. Same goes for all of the teachers I had. They all seemed pretty damn neutral.

Perhaps it's changed a ton. Ask Jordan Peterson or the prof at the center of the Evergreen State fiasco. But perhaps like many things it's been sensationalized by the current news culture.

I saw it coming in about 2002 or so.

In fact, it was part of what motivated me to take a "vacation" in Iraq in 2004- I was burned out on the adversarial nature of what was going on with law enforcement in general

(Think of that- I went to Iraq for a break)

Police have seen this writing on the wall for several years- and it is due to many factors (one is police misconduct, but that's a small part of the pie)

My final decision to leave was when we got a new police chief whose priorities had everything to do with politics and window dressing and nothing to do with proactive policing and protecting your officers from the mob (when they are in the right)

Now we are seeing police basically getting stand down orders when it comes to these assholes blocking roads and disrupting everyday life, but it didn't happen in a vacuum- this stuff has been going on for years but it is now finally starting to affect people

Wait until depolicing starts showing up in the UCR - it's gonna be fun

I agree that something has changed. I just don't think that it is a recent phenomenon. IMO, the change started gradually but has been picking up steam. And in many ways it is just a manifestation of the polarization of American politics. BLM/Occupy and the Tea Party are just two sides of the same coin. Too many people are getting their news/information from sources that just reinforce their own thoughts and prejudices and they refuse to listen to or consider alternative points of view. Maybe it started with the birth of the Web and has grown from there. It would be a fascinating study to try and determine the factors influencing polarization and the places where it is having the greatest impact.
