Hey, I've been in the reasonable middle for a couple of decades now, it's still alive and well here. Problem is getting a national candidate (President) who wants to govern from the reasonable middle, or at least pretend to want to do that during an election.

Yup. My issue is that on a daily basis the folks with which I interact are probably 90% lib and most of them have gone full retard since Trump's election.

It's funny that a lot of people in my office actually think I'm a lib. I've never once implied that, but I have to keep my political distance because everyone in my office is my client. I'm the only employee of my company in my office. Mrs89 has a similar situation where her entire board is liberal. The requirements of the board are that they can't have more than a certain number of one political party, so they just have the folks who want to be on the board switch from D to I. They all assume she is a D and she just plays along.

I do like to give 89 grief but I also recognize that he has moderated his position on the death penalty and probably one or two other issues as well.

I am still well right of center, but IMO I'm way closer to the middle than a lot of the liberals that post here. I've become more of a "walk a mile" person. I debunk a lot of what my far right friends forward, post or repeat in the hopes that they will think about the issue instead of repeating the crap on the radio or TV. Years ago I probably would have never voted for gay marriage, but I did when it came up in MD. As you noted, I used to be pro capital punishment and now I'm way more in favor of rehabilitation than incarceration. I've become quite anti-war. I am still pro-life and I don't see that changing unless I suddenly have a brain injury.

That's almost the same as me, but I've also changed my mind about marijuana.

Basically, if there's one fundamental way I've changed since graduating college I care more about evidence-based policy because basing your political beliefs on vague terms like "social justice", "liberty", and "freedom" and "states rights" inevitably leads to contradictions. My opposition to abortion and my lack of craps to give if some city council opens up a meeting with a prayer have both survived that change, too.

Politics isn't like mathematics where you can start with a few axioms and get answers about big and difficult questions. Pesky reality defies applying a small and simplistic set of rules for dealing with human affairs.

And the government used what is essentially a religious term for a contractual relationship. The government would be better off approving domestic partnerships and letting churches or individuals decide if they want to call it a marriage.
