Oh I don't blame authors for the fact that publications aren't readily accessible for free. I do think, though, that the abstract should have included something about how subjects were selected because that is the first obvious question to come to mind.Pwns wrote:
The authors of the papers have no control over whether or not their papers are available to the public. Actually, I guess they do, but the only way for them to be available for free is to publish in open-access journals which are generally less prestigious and don't do as much for your career.
I gotta say, too, that I've always felt that you live in the world as it is regardless of how you would like it to be. Like I don't think there should be a Social Security system but I am going to take my Social Security.
I don't think the fact that someone who supports policies designed to reduce "climate change" personally engages in things that are believed to lead to "climate change" means all that much. They support the policies and them personally buying a SUV instead of an electric car doesn't have much impact. What has impact...if impact is going to be had...is the body of policies.

Wife and I were discussing this on Saturday. We came away with the same conclusion - people aren't wearing these dresses, or opening Taco trucks, etc.. to be rude, offensive or evil. If anything - they are respecting the culture. Leftists have taken the Bully Pulpit by storm and see no issues with being the bully. By taking offense at everything - they will eventually become victims of their own design.CID1990 wrote:

I can't tell you how many people I saw on FB or Instagram, especially one friend who is a dyed in the wool leftist, "celebrating" Cinco de Mayo. I made the conscious decision to post on her wall that just the other day she was bitching about a girl in a prom dress, now she's taking tequila shots in honor of Mexico's victory in some battle 100+ years ago. It cuts both ways - lots of rednecks I know that voted for Trump and want the wall were having "Cinco de Drinko" parties.

Hey I guess it's a news item since I heard it on NPR today. And I had no idea until I heard it.
Stormy Daniels is from my neck of the woods. Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Started her adult entertainment career at the Gold Club in Baton Rouge.
You go girl! If what you're doing contributes to this country getting rid of that atrocity it's all good! I don't know if it will because the Republican base apparently wouldn't care if they found out he's a cannibal who eats boiled babies for breakfast. But give it a shot. What the heck.

Just saw Katie whatever her last name is miss a chance to nail a Republican trying to argue that Trump's comments are a WHOLE different thing than the West Virginia Senate candidate saying "China People."
She used a bunch of examples but the one that would have really pinned the Republican guy down is when he exclaimed "he's a Mexican" in response to the Judge Gonzalo Curiel thing. I'd have loved to have seen the Republican guy trying to wriggle his way out of that one and she missed the chance.

I'm a Catholic and I was only slightly offended. Even then, I just swiped further down my Facebook feed and didn't need to see it again. But yes, I doubt they would've done it or gotten away with any other religious group as a dress theme.Ibanez wrote:Speaking of appropriation:

With that said, the whole idea of a Met Gala and the dressing up like that is very Hunger Games-like. Dystopian novels do a good job of taking ideas and slightly altering them to fit a good novel, and in some cases, like this, they don't even need to slightly alter the ideas.

The fact that they don't see it is scary. Trump supporters are not exactly the most rational people (as in they're not very rational at all) but you throw a whole party of Hollywood and entertainment folks dressing up in mocked up versions of a religion's images and it affirms biases these folks already have that the left hates them and truly does think they are deplorables. Trump didn't make any of this political environment happen, he just happen to be a person who could take advantage of it. If we're not careful, he's going to keep taking advantage of it through January of 2025.Ibanez wrote:The hypocrisy of the left is just mind boggling.GannonFan wrote:

Should porn star be a protected class?

A prospective tenant with great credit, a steady flow of income and no prior criminal history seems like the perfect fit for any landlord. But what happens when it’s revealed that individual’s line of work exists in what some believe to be a moral gray area?
Auroa Snow, the former adult film actress-turned journalist penned an opinion piece for news publication The Daily Beast that detailed accounts of discrimination by landlords. This discrimination wasn’t race or gender-based per say, but solely due to the occupation of Snow and others.
The Fair Housing Act — passed in 1968 as part of the Civil Rights Act — makes it illegal to discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status or national origin in the renting or selling of housing. The law does not mention occupation.

What if I have a duplex and I don't want to rent to a night shift operator because I'm afraid their hours will conflict with mine? For example, I had an upstairs neighbor when I lived at the beach who was a waitress at a bar. She would arrive home at 2am, often drunk (puking drunk) and she would get in a fight with her boyfriend and then have loud make-up sex two or three nights (mornings) a week. I had to be up at 6am most mornings to work my day job. She was an ugly pig to boot.
If you put occupation in as a protected class, I have to rent to her if has owned that building and I'd probably have a hard time getting rid of her without fear of being sued.
Re: Miscellaneous news items that don't warrant their own thread
Being a nuisance is one thing. But why wouldn't you rent to someone b/c they work the graveyard shift? Many first res ponders and medical professionals work the night shift. It just seems silly to me. If they have stable employment and the ability to pay, you have them sign a lease and lay out all expectations. If you don't want to rent out to college students or some group that is more likely to be a problem - then that's your prerogative.89Hen wrote:So your answer is yes, occupation should be a protected class.Ibanez wrote:Law-abiding citizens with the ability to pay should have access to housing.

The last time I rented an apartment my next door neighbor was a paralegal by day an an avid gamer at night. She was hot though.
I guess it all depends on your circumstances and comfort zone. I wouldn't care how you made money,as long as it was legal. I would only have a concern if you started damaging the property and weren't paying.
