Yes. Yes there absolutely is. Why is that not obvious?

It's real easy to say "fvck em" when it's not you being inconvenienced so a bunch of dumbass west-coast greenies can get the same warm fuzzies they get from charging their hybrid cars in their coal-fired power grid and trading it in after 3 years.

Oh good lord.

The question would be, "is it worth it"? It's a matter of degree and values. Some would say any reduction in plastic waste, including straws is worth the inconvenience. The planet and our children's future is that important.

I'm not that extreme, and I have issues with government regulation.

But we are already looking into replacing plastic straws at our business. That's a voluntary decision and one we can feel good about (if that's ok with you, pwnsie... :finger: ) It's also a good PR move. And yes, if the alternative biodegradable straws (hemp anyone?) aren't improved to a point where they match the effectiveness of plastic, we will continue to keep a small supply of plastic on hand for those with disabilities.

If the abolition of plastic becomes mandatory due to county statute or state law, I'm guessing we'll be required to post stickers and have a line on our menu that reads "plastic straws available for those with disabilities".

No, I think I can definitively say that it's not in fact worth it, because you're talking about basically doing nothing at a cost of less-than-nothing. And don't give me that "but every little bit helps" crap. The ecosystem isn't going to grade for effort and good intentions.

And it's not "just a start", either, because we all know we're only going to ban plastic goods that will only inconvenience a low-enough percentage of people that there won't be a pushback. We could have a bigger impact on the oceans by banning hormone-based birth control pills that are wreaking havoc on fish reproduction, but those are pretty much sacred cows that won't be touched.

Were you only so tenaciously insightful and unyieldingly rigid in your application of logic elsewhere...

Banning plastic grocery bags and those plastic six-pack binders would help a lot. Can’t recycle them. Might as well outlaw ‘em.

Yet, in your opening post on the topic, you admitted it would "eliminate a tiny percentage that ends up in the ocean" which means it would have some positive effect. Forget about the amount for a second (although one could also consider the awareness factor of using plastic in general). If plastic has a negative effect on ocean life (and there are multiple theories it does), and elimination of straws reduces the amount of plastic in the ocean (even just a little) then you are confusing fact with opinion/values. At what point would it be worth it to you?

And yes, if pharmaceuticals are causing a problem with fish, perhaps we can do something about that as well? Is your assertion that banning them would have a bigger impact on the oceans a fact, or also just your opinion/value determination as well?

Final question, are you an environmentalist?

This. Or do with many brewers do - use reusable 6 pack binders. Though, the issue there is that people have to return the binder to the brewery, or a brewery, that will accept them. Image
