Darn. No more "Lemmings" metaphor.

Post by JohnStOnge »

This morning while talking to my wife I referred to Trump supporters as "lemmings." My wife asked me what a lemming is so I told her about how lemmings commit mass suicide. So I Google to show her what I'm talking about. And that is when I learned after all these years that the idea of lemmings committing mass suicide is an urban legend created by Disney when they faked a scene of lemmings doing that.

http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?ad ... cles_id=56" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The lemmings supposedly committing mass suicide by leaping into the ocean were actually thrown off a cliff by the Disney filmmakers. The epic "lemming migration" was staged using careful editing, tight camera angles and a few dozen lemmings running on snow covered lazy-Susan style turntable.
So I learned that it's an insult to lemmings to compare them to Donald Trump supporters. Have to come up with some other metaphor.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

But you can become a Republican Party official which begs the question: are the establishment Republicans the lemmings in this primary or is it the Trump supporters?

If Trump is a lemming, does that mean Obama is a blemming?

She is fine in terms of worldly exposure and intellect. She just never heard of lemmings. Look, as I've written before, I can remember driving in my car to work during the 1990s and hearing the results of a poll in which more than half of Ivy League students couldn't name one Justice on the Supreme Court. My wife may not have known what a lemming is. But I guarantee you she can name every Justice on the Supreme Court. She knows who her Congressional Representative and Senator are (most people don't). She's very engaged and does indeed know what's going on in the world to a lot greater extent than the overwhelming majority of people.

And, though she is on the Republican State Central Committee, she has concluded that she can not vote for Trump nor can she work to support his candidacy in the general election. And I'm proud of her for that. It shows that she is not going to work to help elect a complete A-hole and buffoon just because he is the Republican nominee.

So she's an establishment lemming?
She is definitely not "establishment." She got elected running against the Republican Party establishment candidate and was aligned with a woman who was and is VERY unpopular with that establishment. I guess if you were to HAVE to put a label on her it would be "Tea Party" but that doesn't necessarily fit completely.

Her preferred Republican Presidential Candidate is Ted Cruz. That's not establishment.

In any case she's very engaged and she pays attention. Like when she watches TV she's not watching entertainment and reality shows. If she watches TV at all she's watching news programs. Well...she'll watch some football games and from time to time she'll rent a movie. But for the most part she watches stuff to gather information rather than to be entertained. She's aware that she has to be careful about what she garners from that and fully realizes that all media sources distort things. She would be no fun for one of those people who does "man on the street" interviews to try to make people look stupid. She knows what is going on in the world around her to a much greater extent than most people.

Not at all. Just the truth. She is definitely NOT Republican establishment. In fact, in 2015 she was asked by the insurgents if she would run against the Republican establishment candidate for State Senate. She declined for various reasons. But she is way more "insurgent" Republican than "establishment" Republican. You can say that's good, you can say that's bad, or you can be neutral on the matter. But it is what it is. Thinking my wife is an "establishment" Republican is just objectively incorrect.
