Up yours, Prius-face. You salivate for those Nipponese hybrids.

Savings come slowly for hybrid, electric car owners

If you're thinking about buying a fuel-efficient hybrid, electric or otherwise eco-friendly vehicle as a way to save money over time, do your homework — or be prepared to wait.

Buyers who choose Nissan's all-electric Leaf ($28,421) over its approximate gas-powered equivalent, Nissan's Versa ($18,640), will likely wait nearly 9 years until they break even, according to a new report by The New York Times that examines the cost of fuel efficiency.

For drivers of the Chevrolet Volt ($31,767), the wait is even longer— 26.6 years.

A few vehicles begin paying off relatively soon after leaving the dealership. Two hybrids— Toyota's Prius ($23,537) and Lincoln's MKZ ($33,887)— as well as Volkswagen's diesel-powered Jetta TDI ($25,242) all take less than two years before they start saving their owners money.

Check out this chart by the Times that breaks down the savings delay for many popular fuel-efficient models.

The high price tag of many fuel-efficient vehicles — including the Nissan Leaf, which will soon be made in Smyrna, Tenn. — is one reason consumers have yet to embrace them with open arms.

I am calling bullshit on the numbers for the VW Jetta TDI. I have owned 3 of them and still own 2 of them. They always get in the 43+ range on the highway and can go over 50 if you drive them nicer than I do. My 99.5(manual) got 46 every tank going back and forth to work, 60 miles and it was chipped, had bigger injector nozzles and a larger injection pump. My 03(Manual), stock, gets 46mpg every tank on that same drive. My 06(DSG Auto) gets 43 on that same drive. So for them to say 35 is complete bullshit. I've put several hundred thousand miles on the TDI and the only time it will get 35 is in town when you go like 5 miles and have to stop every mile for a damn light. 35 may have been the older TDI with the shitty auto but 35 is not the mileage they get.

Just an update, but since increasing production in its second year, the "failing" Volt has sold 7,057 halfway through the year. That's about 1500 more than the Corvette so far and counting.

ps. As for the recall, that stuff happens a lot for first year models. I don't know why it was such a big deal.

But you can snag a hot chick with a Vette. All you can get with a Volt is one of those aging hippie skanks who smells bad and doesn't shave her pits.

TBH loves her Fiesta....Get's damn near 40 mpg as well. If she didn't drive 70-77 in it for 95% of her time in it (Interstate travel) she would likely be over 40 mpg.

She is getting about 5 miles more per gallon than she did with her 08 Focus.

Wonder if Obama will still buy one before they go out of production?

The Model 3 and Model S outsell every vehicle in their category (luxury small and luxury midsize). The Model X doesn't do too bad itself but it's not a sales leader either. Honestly I don't think it's bad at all for a 15 year old company with three cars - two of which are sedans in this SUV/CUV crazy world - to be selling more than half BMW does (which has like 20 models).

I like Tesla and want it to succeed; it represents American ingenuity.

The Model 3 outsells every other luxury midsize car?

Where? At the Tesla factory?

If true, that’s great... but you may want to post a link ... because I’m pretty sure Mercedes and BMW both produce midsize luxury cars that outsell the Tesla

Here's the deal on that. Tesla only sells three models, and they don't count the multiple variants within each model as a different model. Meanwhile, Mercedes sells 27 different models in the US, for example, (and that's not even counting the different number designations within each model). So sure, Tesla might sell more Model 3's in September in the US than Mercedes sells CLA coupes for instance, but worldwide Tesla is just a niche product.

See the worldwide (US, Europe and China) figures I posted above for BMW and Tesla. BMW sold roughly 1.3 million cars to Tesla's 165k. A magnitude of 8.

Hey, I'm all for Tesla succeeding as well, but when you try to go up against companies with the resources of their competitors, you're going to be poached of brains, conspired against, and bloodied on the way up. I wish them luck.

By the way, we're only looking at luxury figures. We haven't even gotten into VW, Renault-Nissan, Toyota, GM, Hyundai-Kia, Ford, or Honda: the real players in the auto industry. VW sold 9.1 million cars through October.

Did you read the links you posted?

They confirm that your statement, “The Model 3 and Model S outsell every vehicle in their category (luxury small and luxury midsize)” is incorrect.

Ok I'm sorry for not adding "in the US." For some reason I thought I did.

Also I never said luxury "car" in general; I said in its category.
