It's awesome because Trump (and his success) is the absolute reflection of the Republican Party and it's freaking those folks the fuck out.

I've never liked Trump, but he's past the point of embarrassing the party - he's so contradictory I'm not sure you can even say for certain to which party he belongs. The third grade insults, lack of substance, and general arrogance have me pointed toward anyone but him at this point. The sound bites from last nights' "performance" are just ridiculous.

After spending 45 years crafting a base from the most ignorant and bigoted people in the nation, an outsider has waltzed in, stolen their creation, and is now beating the living shit out of them with it and they're so feeble-minded that they can't even see the humor in the situation. Which you have to admit is absofuckinglutely hilarious. Poor dumb rednecks were supposed to do what they was told....

I normally don't find much fault with Zakaria, but I somewhat disagree. To say that the conks have cornered the market on populism after two Obama terms is a misnomer. Additionally, I think we've seen race relations fall to a new low under this administration, which certainly can't be placed solely on republicans. And 20 years ago we were in the middle of the first Clinton administration.

I do agree that Trump is checking a lot of boxes for a lot of people. Americans have been afraid since 9/11 and any politician in this era who can effectively sell fear (of minorities, of muslims, of immigrants, etc.) will do well.

:ohno:
Nailed it. I caught about 20 minutes of the debate (ironically the immigration portion  ) and heard Trump scramble his way out of his hard line stance on illegal immigration. Heard Rubio and Cruz take him to town for hiring foreign workers over Americans at his Palm Beach hotel, which of course fed into the supposed tapes that the NY Times (or another paper, I forget) has that supposedly outlines Trump saying he is outright lying to the conks (I realize that the tapes issue is all he said she said, so I'm not putting a lot of stock in its existence). Trump then went on to claim he'll make deals cause that is what a President is suppose to do.

So out of that 20 minutes or so that I listened to, how exactly is he the hard liner that is going to blow the system up? :suspicious:

Cluck, you there? Paging Clucky. Paging clucky...

Trump just epictrolled the conks in a serious way.

I hate to break this to you but, though I don't know about the most bigoted part, the Democratic Party has the more ignorant base among the two major parties, and I'm confident that exit polling will once again support that assessment.

I also think that a lot of Trump's support is coming from outside of what has traditionally been the Republican Party. Not that there aren't a whole lot of people who have been Republicans for a while with him. But I also think there are a lot of people who haven't been Republicans who are voting in Republican primaries for him.

Here's an article on an example of what I'm talking about (in Massachusetts, of all places):

I don't think Trump is the favorite of what in the past has been the "Republican Base." I don't have a scientific poll but I obviously know a lot of people who have been part of that. My wife has been a very active Tea Party type Republican for a while now. She became a member of the State Republican Central Committee when she was drafted to run for that by people who were against the Republican establishment. My son was real big in the Tea Party movement. My daughter too.

All of them are horrified by Trump. All have said they absolutely would not vote for him in the general election just as I have. They have said they will either abstain or vote for a third party candidate. I might actually vote for the Democratic nominee. If it looks like Louisiana is close I will do that. As bad as whoever the Democrat nominee would be, they can't be as bad as Trump.

I've also talked to other family members, people at work, etc., who I know to have been Republicans for a long time. Not a single one of them likes Trump. All of them are, like my immediate family, horrified by what is going on and none of them can believe this is happening.

Did y'all notice that Trump said he'd save $300 billion in medicare spending by controlling prescription costs when Medicare spends about $140 billion per year on prescriptions?

I swear, the fact that ANYBODY would vote for that buffoon/arsehole much less have THIS going on is surreal.

I disagree. A year ago I could never have envisioned a circumstance in which I would vote for Hillary. But the emergence of Donald Trump has changed things. There is no way that I could ever vote in a way that would increase the chances of Donald Trump being President. As bad as Hillary being President would be, Donald Trump being President would be worse.

As I told my wife a couple of months ago: If we got into a theoretical situation in which my vote was going to decide who would be President between Hillary and Trump, I would have to hold my nose really hard and vote for Hillary.

If it's Trump vs. Hillary in the general election and it looks like Louisiana is in play I am going to vote for Hillary.

You matter. Unless you multiply yourself by c squared. Then you energy.
