NOT ONE FUCKING PENNY
of US tax dollars should be headed anywhere near Japland.
If people want to donate out of the kindness of their hearts and souls, great, go for it if it helps you get to sleep at night
In this age of the federal deficit and buget being what it is, I don't want to hear about one single fucking penny of public dollars flowing into the 3rd largest economy.
if they were some sort of 3rd world craphole, the case could be made for aid on a humanitarian basis, but this is JAPLAND we're talking about here. The 3rd largest economy on the planet. They would be more than happy to stab us in the back and OWN us if they could.
not one single penny. period.

Katrina News:
The government of Japan has donated $2,000,000 in cash to the American Red Cross and some $800,000 in relief supplies -- from blankets to generators -- already are arriving to aid the most needy. Japanese firms with operations in the United States have donated some $12 million in total, including Honda Motor Corporation ($5 million), Hitachi ($1 million) and Nissan (more than $750,000).

Yeah, that'll show 'em!!!!
Of course the Japanese could sell their holdings in US treasuries to finance a portion of their rebuilding efforts, which would tank the bond market and send interest rates skyrocketing, thereby probably crashing an already fragile recovery.

Re: NOT ONE FUCKING PENNY
Recently a New York Yankee coach told a story to the team in the clubhouse at Spring Training. He told a story of a young girl who was seriously injured in an accident last fall that left her horse dead. The young girl is the daughter of another coach who had coached this young man in the minor leagues, to this day they remained friends... the other coach is employed by the Boston Red Sox.
Within minutes every player in the clubhouse was handing him checks and cash to pass on to Ron Johnson.
This is a story of compassion, this is what makes America so great, that we as a society are always ready to stand and help our fellow citizens of the world.
There is no doubt in my mind that Americans will lead the way in assisting our friends in Japan both as individuals and with government assistance, thats what helps make us the greatest nation on earth.

Re: NOT ONE **** PENNY
I saw a story about that not long ago on ESPN. His daughter still has a lot of medical treatment ahead of her and lost a leg ... but, believe it or not, she's back riding horses again. Amazing courage for a 10-year-old.UNHWildCats wrote:Recently a New York Yankee coach told a story to the team in the clubhouse at Spring Training. I'll bet that every penny in humanitarian aid to Japan ends up where it belongs: with those who need it most. Not like other disaster zones I could name, where the local thugocracy skims off the cream.

Japan is our strongest and probably most reliable ally in the Pacific. Give them what they need to get going again. I’d rather we blow money in Japan than Haiti, or in a “joint” military operation in Libya…at least the Japs are worth the investment.

Dead on for the compassionate posts above. Help them both individually through private charities and collectively through the government. That attitude is what sets us apart from much of the world. The USA should make a positive difference in the world yet again and inflame our enemies, both at home and abroad who can't stand our generosity. Long live American exceptionalism.

I think we should extend the federal pay freeze for a few more years to pay for it. Maybe lay off some FSA and NRCS employees too. Or make them drive an old pickup.

Do you have any clue, do you? Do you know which country holds a HUGE portion of our debt? JAPAN. As was stated above, all they'd have to do is call in that debt - and we'd be more fucked than Snooki during Fleet Week.
Setting aside that very practical consideration, is this:
We've just watched a first world superpower get turned in to a third world country in some places by an act of nature. A calamity on a scale so large, that it will become the standard by which fucked up situations are measured for a generation. When your friend is brought to their knees in that way, you don't look at them and say "tough shit, I've got a few problems of my own." You nut the fuck up and help - because that's what a man does. You help them because they helped you... and not that long ago. In the wake of 9-11 and Katrina - the Japanese proved nothing but steadfast allies - helping however and wherever they could. As recently as last summer - the Japanese sent experts and technology to help unfuck the situation the Gulf of Mexico - because that's what allies do.

Instead - we're showing the world that when we act as a force in this world, far more often than not, we act as a force for good - and we do so without expectation of repayment, we do so because we still are the leaders of the free world and the most powerful nation on earth - and because we recognize that such a position carries with it responsibilities.

OSBF may want to come back on here now and state something to the effect "This was just a joke, I wanted to post something that the conks would normally post!".
That's always an easy deflection and I just wanted to make sure that it was taken away before he tried to use it. Now the hard work of actually defending the position can begin OSBF.
